Dr. Michelle Monje studies how the brain develops after birth, throughout childhood and young adulthood, to develop the complex neural circuits that are required for high-level cognitive and motor functions.
She investigates how the microenvironment influences the decision of neuronal precursor cells to choose a specific fate in healthy and diseased brains. Neuronal precursor cells are submitted to signals from both neuronal and non-neuronal cells, which include glial cells.
Dr. Monje’s research has led to a better understanding of the role of precursor cells in brain cancer and brain repair. As a practicing neurologist and Neuro-oncologist, Dr Monje is particularly interested in the roles for neural precursor cell function and dysfunction in the origins of pediatric brain tumors and the consequences of cancer treatment.
Dr. Monje’s work provides important insight on the role of the microenvironment in the development of brain tumors in children.
