Two postdoctoral fellow positions in the field of Neuroscience are immediately available in the research group of Dr. Jiami Guo, Calgary University, Alberta, Canada. The research team focuses on the function of primary cilia, under-appreciated cellular antenna, in brain development and function and how disrupted cilia contribute to neurological disorders such as intellectual disabilities, autism spectrum disorders, and glioblastoma.
Interested applicants must have a Ph.D. and/or M.D. degree in a field related to Neuroscience or Biomedical sciences.

For position 1, previous research experience with neurodevelopment, human/mouse genetics, iPSC, biochemistry, molecular cloning, organoids, single-cell RNAseq, next-generation RNAseq will be considered a plus;

For position 2, 2-photon live imaging, in vitro and in vivo electrophysiology, optogenetic/chemogenetic neural circuit manipulations, rodent behavioral assays, neural surgeries and viral delivery of genes will be considered a strong plus. This position will be co-supervised by another PI who is a leading expert in these techniques.

Successful applicants will be highly motivated and energetic individuals with good communication skills, interest and experience in neuroscience/cell biology /developmental biology /genetics, and will have a proven publication record and the ability to work independently.

Three Tenure-Track Positions in the Biomedical and Molecular Sciences – Queen’s University

Stroke Neurologists – Windsor Regional Hospital

Windsor Regional Hospital (WRH) is a multi-faceted health services organization operating from two main sites, the Metropolitan Campus and the Ouellette Campus. As a designated Enhanced District Stroke Centre, Windsor Regional Hospital provides specialized services for stroke and TIA patients offering timely hyper-acute treatments like tPA and endovascular therapy (Thrombectomy and Coiling), as well as neurosurgical services. The hospital has neurologists, neurosurgeons, and interventional radiologists on staff providing expert care for stroke patients. Following intervention, post procedure recovery and stabilization in the ICU, patients are transferred to the Acute Stroke Unit, a designated 16-bed unit dedicated to the care of Stroke patients. Inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation services for Windsor-Essex are offered locally through Hôtel-Dieu Grace Healthcare. Outpatient Rehab options direct from hospital also includes the Intensive Hospital to Home Rehab program and E-Rehab services provided through the Erie St. Clair LHIN.

Corticothalamic synaptic physiology in a Rett Syndrome mouse model

2 year funded Postdoctoral position, University of Victoria, BC Canada – available immediately

Rett syndrome is a neurodevelopmental disorder which manifests postnatally due to loss of function of an X-linked transcription factor MECP2, which controls various aspects of neuronal and synapse maturation. Studies will be performed primarily on female mice heterozygous for Mecp2 in which approximately half of neurons express the wild type and half the mutant allele. By utilizing a GFP-based nuclear marker we identify neurons expressing the wild-type or non-functional (mutated) Mecp2 allele for targeted physiological recordings. Optogenetic stimulation of virally-expressed channel rhodopsin will be used to investigate the relative strength of input from thalamus to cortex and feedback from cortex to thalamus for mutant versus wildtype neurons. Preference will be given to a researcher with experience in whole cell patch clamp recording (current and or voltage clamp) in acute brain slices or in vivo. Position Description

Under the supervision of the Investigator, the technologist will assist with neurobehavioural research. Specifically, our lab focuses on understanding the molecular and synaptic mechanisms underlying social memory using mouse and zebrafish models.

Here’s What You’ll Get To Do:

  • Performing electrophysiology, molecular biology, imaging and behavioural experiments
  • Maintaining animal colonies
  • Collecting experimental data, verifying results, performing analysis and passing on findings
  • Working in collaboration with team of researchers and trainees

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • Recent Masters or Bachelor’s Degree in Physiology, Neuroscience, Molecular Genetics, Cell Biology or equivalent degree
  • Minimum 2 years relevant experience preferably in a basic neuroscience research laboratory setting
  • Experience working with mice and/or zebrafish is preferred
  • Electrophysiology experience is considered an asset
  • Minimum one (1) year of experience with molecular biology techniques (e.g. cloning, PCR, western blotting, preparation of buffers and standard solutions), genetic methods (e.g. the design and execution of genetic crosses), and microscopy techniques, including preparation of specimens for immunofluorescence microscopy
  • Demonstrated experience interpreting experimental results, troubleshooting experiments, and managing priorities and deadlines
  • Experience with computer software tools (e.g. Microsoft Office, R/SPSS, and Adobe Photoshop/Illustrator)
  • Coding experience preferably Python is an asset
  • Experience with online molecular biology analysis tools (e.g. BLAST and primer design tools)
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, ability to exercise initiative and deal effectively with other lab members

Employment Type:

Full-time 15 Month Contract with a possibility of extension, 1.0 FTE

Neurological Outcome of Glycemia in Neonatal Encephalopathy

The Neurosciences & Mental Health Program at the Hospital for Sick Children Research Institute is seeking an enthusiastic postdoc researcher to work in close collaboration with neurologists, neurophysiologists, and neuroradiologists in analysing pre-existing continuous glucose, EEG, and clinical data.

With the direction of principal supervisors Drs. Emily Tam and Cecil Hahn, you will work closely with affiliated staff and students who form a group that use neuroimaging and neurophysiology to study newborn brain disorders.

Despite therapeutic hypothermia for hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE), rates of death and major disability continue to be high. Using continuous glucose monitoring, we have found that hyperglycemia occurs in more than 50% of HIE, associated with brain injury and possibly long-term outcomes. This study uses continuous glucose data paired with continuous electroencephalography (cEEG) and detailed clinical data to determine the temporal relationships between abnormal glycemia and brain function.

This is part of an ongoing project that is funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

A substantial amount of data already exists for this project and the motivated researcher will be able to jump straight into analysis.


  • PhD in a relevant area (engineering or computer sciences) required.
  • Must have experience with EEG analyses
  • Well developed skills in data science is required.
  • Computer programming (Matlab, Python, or R) and/or signal processing/time series analyses.
  • Proven experience in research commensurate with your level of experience post-PhD.
  • Experience in analysis of neurophysiological data is preferred.
  • Experience in clinical research would be an asset.
  • Excellent communication skills (oral and written).
  • Be able to work independently and meet deadlines.

Academic Neurologist – McMaster University and Hamilton Health Sciences

Canada Research Chair (Tier II) in Computational Behavioural Neuroscience, University of Calgary

The Department of Psychology in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Calgary invites applications for a Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) Canada Research Chair (CRC) Tier II in Computational Behavioural Neuroscience. The successful candidate will be appointed at the rank of Assistant Professor (Tenure-track) in the Department of Psychology. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2021.

The Chair will establish and maintain an active and externally funded research program. The Chair will be expected to undertake research that investigates the neural control of behavior in model systems, and use computational techniques as an integral component of their data collection and/or analysis. Candidates with research programs directed toward understanding the mechanisms of experience-dependent plasticity of neural circuits underlying behavior are of particular interest. The Chair’s research program will be aligned with both the University of Calgary’s and the Faculty of Arts’ strategic plans. Graduate student position studying sensory learning and adult neurogenesis – Lindsey laboratory – University of Manitoba

We are seeking an outstanding graduate student with an interest in adult neurogenesis, and learning and memory to lead an exciting new project focusing on the role of adult neural stem cells for learning in response to changes in the sensory environment. To address this question our lab takes advantage of the zebrafish model that houses adult neurogenic zones in brain structures that process both sensory and cognitive input. We have established numerous transgenic lines to address this question and have recently setup a new Noldus DanioVision Behavioral System for experimental design and behavioral analysis. This position will provide trainees the opportunity to learn zebrafish animal husbandry, innovate new behavioral and sensory learning paradigms, perform advanced imaging including confocal microscopy, correlative electron microscopy, and 3-D brain imaging methods, as well as transgenic design. The successful candidate will be admitted to the graduate program through the Department of Human Anatomy and Cell Science at the University of Manitoba, where they are expected to fulfill course work in addition to thesis based research. The candidate will be paid an annual stipend to cover tuition and living expenses.

BrainsCAN Graduate Studentship Program at Western University

We are pleased to announce the “Call for Applications” for the BrainsCAN Graduate Studentship Program. This program is part of Western’s $66M BrainsCAN initiative, supported by the Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF). The CFREF investment is intended to enable researchers at the University, along with their national and international academic and commercial partners, to seek answers to fundamental questions regarding how we learn, think, move and communicate.

Recruiting the next generation of neuroscience researchers is a key aim of BrainsCAN. The BrainsCAN Graduate Studentship Program has been developed to attract the world’s most promising prospective master’s and doctoral students in cognitive neuroscience to Western University.

Up to five BrainsCAN Graduate Studentships will be awarded in this competition to highly qualified individuals pursuing a collaborative research project in cognitive neuroscience. This Studentship is open to any prospective graduate student not currently, or recently, enrolled in a graduate program at Western, and will provide a minimum salary of $25,000 for 2 years for master’s students, and $35,000 for 3 years for doctoral students.

Already ranked amongst the best in the world in cognitive neuroscience and neuroimaging, Western researchers employ cognitive, computational, clinical, and translational approaches to understand and intervene in brain function. Our graduate students will have access to BrainsCAN-supported core facilities for neuroimaging; for studying human cognition, behaviour and sensorimotor control; for development and use of computational methods; and for establishing and exploring rodent and nonhuman primate models of cognition and behaviour. Skilled staff within these cores support state-of-the-art technical equipment including research-only MRI systems (3T, 7T, and 9.4T), laboratories for cognitive, behavioural, and electrophysiological testing in humans and animal models, advanced molecular techniques, a sleep laboratory, and access to a variety of neurological patient populations in affiliated teaching hospitals.

Applicants must identify and contact potential advisors at Western before applying. An interdisciplinary, collaborative approach, involving more than one lab is a requirement for application.
