Research Technician TCNLab at Western University

A Research Technician position is available immediately under the supervision of Dr. Lisa Saksida and Dr. Tim Bussey in the Translational Cognitive Neuroscience Lab (TCNLab) and BrainsCAN Rodent Cognition Core (RCC) at The University of Western Ontario. The research carried out by the TCNLab and the RCC teams combines neurobiological techniques for manipulating and observing brain circuits (e.g., DREADDs, optogenetics, pharmacology, transgenic and knockout mouse models, viral vectors, fibre photometry) with sophisticated analysis of cognition using mainly touchscreen-based assessment systems.

The Research Technician will assist with the research conducted in the TCNLab and the RCC at many levels. They will be expected to have a high degree of technical expertise and will help coordinate the general day-to-day operations in the TCNLab and in the RCC. They will gain proficiency in the scientific techniques used in the lab, and will develop and maintain SOPs and train lab members in their use. The Research Technician will be responsible for maintaining lab space, lab equipment and managing supplies. They will interact with work in collaboration with other lab staff, postdoctoral fellows and students.

Cognitive neuroscience in health and disease is a major research focus at Western, which is currently supported by BrainsCAN, a $66M Canada First Research Excellence Fund grant awarded to Western in 2016. The Robarts Research Institute and the Brain and Mind Institute together create a vibrant neuroscience research community with many opportunities for collaborations. Qualified applicants should have at minimum a 2 year Community College Diploma in Biotechnology, Veterinary Technician or related discipline, and 1-2 years experience in a neuroscience related research laboratory environment with experience in molecular and cellular analysis of brain tissue and in behavioural analysis of rodents. Undergraduate or Masters degree in Life Sciences, prior experience in rodent models of brain disease, molecular and cellular biology, optogenetics and/or DREADDs will be an asset. The Departments seek an emerging scholar as an assistant professor with a commitment to excellence in teaching and research. Excellent candidates at any level will be considered. The ideal candidate will be an energetic, interdisciplinary, and visionary early career scholar committed to the study of Neuroscience and Cognition preferably with a research program that uses computational methods and theory. The successful candidate will hold a Ph.D. and preferably post-doctoral experience or other distinguishing attributes in Biology, Computer Science, Psychology, Neuroscience or Neurobiology or a related field. The successful candidate will carry out research and develop a competitive research program that emphasizes mechanistic, comparative, or evolutionary aspects of the neurophysiology, molecular, or cognitive processes underlying behaviour. Candidates working with a range of experimental systems, including model organisms are welcome to apply. Preference will be given to candidates with a bioinformatics, computational or “big data” focus on neurobiology. The successful candidate will have their home department in either Biological Sciences or Computer Science. Tenure Track Faculty Position in Behavioural Neuroscience – Concordia University, Montreal

The Department of Psychology at Concordia University in Montreal invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in behavioural neuroscience. The ideal candidate should have a record of innovative research on fundamental neurobiological mechanisms of behaviour using rodents as a model species.

Research approaches including but not limited to molecular, cellular, systems, and computational neuroscience will be considered. This position will build on existing strengths in research on addiction, motivation, cognition, learning and memory, biological rhythms and neurophysiology at Concordia. The successful applicant will become a full member of The Center for Studies in Behavioral Neurobiology, and will have access to state-of-the-art facilities at Concordia University, including the PERFORM center, the Center for Microscopy and Cell Imaging and the Center for Biological Applications of Mass Spectrometry. We anticipate filling this position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor.

Qualifications
Eligible applicants require a PhD in Psychology, Neuroscience or relevant field, and a strong record of publication in peer-reviewed, scientific journals. Postdoctoral position on neurobiology of motor recovery – Université de Montréal, Dancause laboratory

A postdoctoral position is available in the laboratory of Numa Dancause at the University of Montréal in the Dept. of Neurosciences. The lab studies questions related to the mechanisms involved in the control of movement, the plasticity supporting motor recovery after brain injury and the impact of neuromodulatory approaches, such as transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), on the brain. To do so, we use rodent and non-human primate models. Projects can also take advantage of ongoing collaborations with laboratories working with humans.

Candidates must be highly motivated scientists, with a competitive CV for national and provincial salary award competitions. Prior experience with non-human primates and neural recordings in awake animals are desirable. A Post-Doctoral Fellowship is available under the supervision of Dr. Nathan Kolla, Vice President, Research & Academics, and in association with the Department of Psychiatry, University of Toronto. This Fellowship offers the opportunity to gain and contribute knowledge to the area of risk factors and assessment. The ideal student is interested in forensic mental health, psychopathy, genetics, neuroscience and risk factor identification.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Develop and implement work plans for current and new research projects as well as coordinate, oversee and execute study procedures and research protocols.
  • Apply for funding (award applications) to local, provincial, and/or national research agencies.
  • Recruit and conduct patient testing as per research protocol.
  • Collect, clean, and analyze data; develop and oversee the maintenance of research databases; conduct descriptive and inferential data analyses.
  • Prepare, edit, and format manuscripts for publications and grant applications.
  • Publish original research results obtained during tenure in appropriate journals and other recognized media including the preparation of research summaries for display on the Institute’s website.

Requirements/Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent degree with an emphasis on mental health.
  • Prior experience in a clinical mental healthcare environment; forensic experience preferred.
  • Current knowledge of and experience with advanced research design, research methodologies, patient recruitment and testing, data analysis, genetic screening, and risk assessments.
  • Advanced statistical training and knowledge of statistical software packages (e.g., SPSS).
  • Evidence of experience in preparation and publication of manuscripts, including at least two first author publications (accepted or in press); strong technical writing skills.
  • Results-oriented work ethic to work independently and undertake tasks needed to accomplish work objectives and deliver quality, consistent and timely results.

Cellular & Molecular Neuroscience postdoctoral position – Magoski laboratory – Queen’s University

A CIHR-funded postdoctoral position is immediately available in the Magoski laboratory at Queen’s University in the Department of Biomedical & Molecular Sciences and the Centre for Neuroscience Studies. Two neurobiology postdoctoral researcher positions funded by NIH and foundation grants are available to study synaptic plasticity as well as myelination mechanisms underlying intellectual disability, anxiety, depression and many other brain functions/dysfunctions. We have created many transgenic mouse models, including lines mimicking human de novo mutation, for these studies. We also use viral injection (AAV or lenti), in combination with (flox/+) mice or shRNA knockdown to study the effect of many human de novo mutations on synaptic functions. The Division of Medical Sciences invites applications for a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair (CRC) in the Neurobiology of Aging and Cognition to complement and broaden the research interests of our core group of Neuroscience researchers. We welcome applications from basic scientists who have a primary focus on the molecular mechanisms of aging in the nervous system, with a strong indication of translational potential for neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer disease, Vascular dementia, Parkinson disease, Huntington disease, Frontotemporal dementia and related diseases. Experience in the use (and/or development) of animal models of cognitive disorders affecting the elderly and studies that range in scope from molecular to behavioural will be especially valued (including a broad range of approaches, like microscopy, bioinformatics, computational neuroscience, and/or combinations thereof). The successful applicant will be nominated by the University for a Tier 2 CRC and, upon approval by the CRC Secretariat, will then be offered a tenure-track or tenured appointment at the appropriate rank, commensurate with qualifications and experience. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2020.

This CRC recruitment is part of a broad strategy to expand and raise the profile of research in aging and health at the University of Victoria. Three other Tier 2 CRCs in related areas of aging research are being recruited in addition to this position. The four new CRCs will be expected to engage with the UVic Institute on Aging and Lifelong Health (https://www.uvic.ca/research/centres/aging/), which has a 25-year history of high-quality research, community outreach, and trainee support. Research strengths in the Institute on Aging and Lifelong Health are currently organized around cognitive health, lifelong health, and vulnerability and frailty. The new recruits will benefit from administrative support and collaborative opportunities provided within the Institute.

Tier 2 CRCs are one of Canada’s premier early career recognition and recruitment programs, and are intended for exceptional emerging scholars (i.e., candidate must have been an active researcher in their field for fewer than 10 years at the time of nomination). However, applicants who are more than 10 years from having earned their highest degree (and where career breaks exist) may have their eligibility for a Tier 2 Chair assessed through the program’s Tier 2 justification process. The Division of Medical Sciences (DMS) was established to promote scholarship and innovation in medical education at the University of Victoria and to support the University of Victoria’s ongoing commitment to an integrated and multidisciplinary approach to health research. The successful nominee will complement and expand the current expertise of neuroscientists in the DMS. With its intimate and collaborative research environment and as host of the Neuroscience Graduate Program, the DMS allows for direct and frequent interaction among PIs, thereby facilitating an interchange of ideas between postdocs and students across labs. We are also a group with a commitment to diversification across our ranks, particularly, although not limited to: racialization, marginalized sexualities, gender identity, Indigeneity and disability.

Requirements
The successful nominee will have a PhD in Neuroscience, Cell Biology, Biology or related field, as well as postdoctoral training. They will have demonstrated potential to develop an externally funded, independent, original and innovative research program that focuses on important questions in the Neurobiology of Aging and Cognition with relevance to human health. The successful nominee will have also demonstrated the potential to achieve international recognition in their field within the next five to ten years. The candidate will offer evidence of high-quality teaching and supervision, having the potential to attract, develop and retain excellent trainees, students and future researchers. The successful nominee will be supportive of diversity and inclusivity.
