New Principal Investigator position in adult neurological diseases using zebra fish approaches at the CHUM Research Center – Department of Neuroscience, Faculty of Medicine, Université de Montréal

The Research Centre of CHUM (CRCHUM) in partnership with the Department of Neurosciences of the Université de Montréal (UdeM) is seeking applicants for a principal investigator position at the rank of assistant or associate research professor in the field of neuroscience and the specific use of zebrafish for the study of adult neurological disorders. The ideal candidate will be zebrafish neurobiologist with a strong expertise in transgenic, genetic and genetic regulation.

The new principal investigator will play a key role in complementing the research strengths of the CRCHUM especially in neurosciences. The mission of the CRCHUM-Neuroscience research axis is to elucidate the biological, environmental and social mechanisms of adult neurological diseases and to develop novel and innovative therapies to prevent, treat or cure them. The research activities incorporate clinical, basic and translational research and focus on neurodegeneration/neurorepair, neuroimmunology, neurovascular/stroke and epilepsy. The CRCHUM neuroscience research activities build on complementary and well-integrated teams and a vast array of cutting-edge approaches. Moreover, multiple research groups within the Faculty of Medicine and the larger Montreal research community offer numerous opportunities for collaboration. Montreal hosts one of the biggest neuroscience communities in North America. UdeM offers excellent training in neurosciences with undergraduate and graduate programs in neuroscience. Requirements

The applicant’s research program should address fundamental biological questions relevant to the physiopathology and treatment of adult neurological diseases, from the cellular/molecular to network levels, using zebrafish approaches. The candidate will have access to a large fish facility.

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. degree, with postdoctoral experience and a strong publication record in zebrafish neurosciences. Candidates will be expected to develop an innovative, internationally recognized, externally funded research program and contribute to teaching as well as to some administrative and academic activities at CRCHUM and UdeM.

Postdoctoral Position: Examining differences in neural profiles in males & females with EEG+fMRI – University of Ottawa

Our laboratory uses clinical electroencephalography (EEG) and neuroimaging techniques (e.g. functional magnetic resonance imaging), coupled with various clinical and cognitive assessment tools, to better understand mental illness. We also assess the effects of various interventions (e.g. exercise, stimulation therapies, drugs) on neural, clinical and cognitive features. Importantly, we attempt to characterize neural profiles that may be predictive of treatment response. Much of our laboratory’s work has focused on depression. However, we also examine brain features in individuals with schizophrenia, ADHD, dysfunctional anger as well as non-psychiatric populations.

The Position

The postdoctoral fellow will be tasked to conduct an NSERC-funded research study examining gender differences in neural profiles between males/females using simultaneous EEG+fMRI. Neural features will be examined in relation to biological measures (estrogen, testosterone and cortisol).

The selected postdoctoral fellow will also have an opportunity to assist in the acquisition/data analyses on one of two projects in clinical samples (depressed, schizophrenia). Within this role, he/she will be expected to assist Dr. Jaworska in the mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students in the laboratory, in manuscript preparation and in grant writing.

Academic qualifications and requirements

  • PhD in neuroscience, psychology, biomedical science or related disciplines.
  • Demonstrated experience in human research and/or cognitive or computational neuroscience.

Required: Neuroimaging analyses (preferred: SPM, CONN) or EEG analyses. Some computational neuroscience experience preferred.
Optimal: Experience in simultaneous EEG+fMRI acquisition & analyses.

Research Technician TCNLab at Western University

A Research Technician position is available immediately under the supervision of Dr. Lisa Saksida and Dr. Tim Bussey in the Translational Cognitive Neuroscience Lab (TCNLab) and BrainsCAN Rodent Cognition Core (RCC) at The University of Western Ontario. The research carried out by the TCNLab and the RCC teams combines neurobiological techniques for manipulating and observing brain circuits (e.g., DREADDs, optogenetics, pharmacology, transgenic and knockout mouse models, viral vectors, fibre photometry) with sophisticated analysis of cognition using mainly touchscreen-based assessment systems.

The Research Technician will assist with the research conducted in the TCNLab and the RCC at many levels. They will be expected to have a high degree of technical expertise and will help coordinate the general day-to-day operations in the TCNLab and in the RCC. They will gain proficiency in the scientific techniques used in the lab, and will develop and maintain SOPs and train lab members in their use. The Research Technician will be responsible for maintaining lab space, lab equipment and managing supplies. They will interact with work in collaboration with other lab staff, postdoctoral fellows and students.

Cognitive neuroscience in health and disease is a major research focus at Western, which is currently supported by BrainsCAN, a $66M Canada First Research Excellence Fund grant awarded to Western in 2016. The Robarts Research Institute and the Brain and Mind Institute together create a vibrant neuroscience research community with many opportunities for collaborations. Qualified applicants should have at minimum a 2 year Community College Diploma in Biotechnology, Veterinary Technician or related discipline, and 1-2 years experience in a neuroscience related research laboratory environment with experience in molecular and cellular analysis of brain tissue and in behavioural analysis of rodents. Undergraduate or Masters degree in Life Sciences, prior experience in rodent models of brain disease, molecular and cellular biology, optogenetics and/or DREADDs will be an asset. Salary will be paid commensurate with experience.

The Departments seek an emerging scholar as an assistant professor with a commitment to excellence in teaching and research. Excellent candidates at any level will be considered. The ideal candidate will be an energetic, interdisciplinary, and visionary early career scholar committed to the study of Neuroscience and Cognition preferably with a research program that uses computational methods and theory. The successful candidate will hold a Ph.D. and preferably post-doctoral experience or other distinguishing attributes in Biology, Computer Science, Psychology, Neuroscience or Neurobiology or a related field. The successful candidate will carry out research and develop a competitive research program that emphasizes mechanistic, comparative, or evolutionary aspects of the neurophysiology, molecular, or cognitive processes underlying behaviour. Candidates working with a range of experimental systems, including model organisms are welcome to apply. Preference will be given to candidates with a bioinformatics, computational or “big data” focus on neurobiology. Tenure Track Faculty Position in Behavioural Neuroscience – Concordia University, Montreal

The Department of Psychology at Concordia University in Montreal invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in behavioural neuroscience. The ideal candidate should have a record of innovative research on fundamental neurobiological mechanisms of behaviour using rodents as a model species.

Research approaches including but not limited to molecular, cellular, systems, and computational neuroscience will be considered. This position will build on existing strengths in research on addiction, motivation, cognition, learning and memory, biological rhythms and neurophysiology at Concordia. The successful applicant will become a full member of The Center for Studies in Behavioral Neurobiology, and will have access to state-of-the-art facilities at Concordia University, including the PERFORM center, the Center for Microscopy and Cell Imaging and the Center for Biological Applications of Mass Spectrometry. We anticipate filling this position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor.

Qualifications
Eligible applicants require a PhD in Psychology, Neuroscience or relevant field, and a strong record of publication in peer-reviewed, scientific journals. Multiple theoretical, computational and experimental neuroscience postdoctoral positions are available immediately at the Centre for Neural Dynamics of the University of Ottawa.

Position 1: Theoretical neuroscience and nonlinear/statistical physics focusing on the dynamics of a population of core recurrent neurons within the hippocampus and their role in temporal and spatial memory. Postdoctoral position on neurobiology of motor recovery – Université de Montréal, Dancause laboratory

A postdoctoral position is available in the laboratory of Numa Dancause at the University of Montréal in the Dept. of Neurosciences. The lab studies questions related to the mechanisms involved in the control of movement, the plasticity supporting motor recovery after brain injury and the impact of neuromodulatory approaches, such as transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), on the brain. To do so, we use rodent and non-human primate models. Projects can also take advantage of ongoing collaborations with laboratories working with humans.

Candidates must be highly motivated scientists, with a competitive CV for national and provincial salary award competitions. Prior experience with non-human primates and neural recordings in awake animals are desirable. A Post-Doctoral Fellowship is available under the supervision of Dr. Nathan Kolla, Vice President, Research & Academics, and in association with the Department of Psychiatry, University of Toronto. This Fellowship offers the opportunity to gain and contribute knowledge to the area of risk factors and assessment. The ideal student is interested in forensic mental health, psychopathy, genetics, neuroscience and risk factor identification.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Develop and implement work plans for current and new research projects as well as coordinate, oversee and execute study procedures and research protocols.
  • Apply for funding (award applications) to local, provincial, and/or national research agencies.
  • Recruit and conduct patient testing as per research protocol.
  • Collect, clean, and analyze data; develop and oversee the maintenance of research databases; conduct descriptive and inferential data analyses.
  • Prepare, edit, and format manuscripts for publications and grant applications.
  • Publish original research results obtained during tenure in appropriate journals and other recognized media including the preparation of research summaries for display on the Institute’s website.
  • Prepare presentations and posters to communicate research findings; attend scientific conferences to present results (subject to the availability of travel funds).

Requirements/Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent degree with an emphasis on mental health.
  • Prior experience in a clinical mental healthcare environment; forensic experience preferred.
  • Current knowledge of and experience with advanced research design, research methodologies, patient recruitment and testing, data analysis, genetic screening, and risk assessments.
  • Advanced statistical training and knowledge of statistical software packages (e.g., SPSS).
  • Evidence of experience in preparation and publication of manuscripts, including at least two first author publications (accepted or in press); strong technical writing skills.
  • Results-oriented work ethic to work independently and undertake tasks needed to accomplish work objectives and deliver quality, consistent and timely results.
  • Demonstrated leadership, conflict resolution, interpersonal and organizational skills.

A CIHR-funded postdoctoral position is immediately available in the Magoski laboratory at Queen’s University in the Department of Biomedical & Molecular Sciences and the Centre for Neuroscience Studies. The Magoski laboratory studies long-term changes to excitability in neuroendocrine cells that control reproduction in the model organism, Aplysia californica (see https://dbms.queensu.ca/faculty/neil-s-magoski). The present position concerns the function of transient receptor potential cation channels and innexin gap junction channels in both native neurons and expression systems. The applicant will hold a PhD and have cell & molecular biology experience, such as PCR-based cloning & genetic manipulation, real-time PCR, mammalian cell culture, immuostaining, fluorescence microscopy, Western blotting, microarray, and transcriptomics. Position Description

The Department of Psychiatry at McGill and the Douglas Hospital Research Centre are currently inviting applications for a tenure-track faculty position in the field of neuroscience and mental health at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor.

This position is part of the Healthy Brains for Healthy Lives (HBHL) initiative, which is a high profile, high priority multidisciplinary and cross-sectoral initiative located at McGill University made possible with support from the Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF). HBHL builds on McGill’s scientific excellence and global leadership in neuroscience.

The Douglas Hospital Research Centre brings together scientists and clinicians spanning a full range of mental health research, including neuroscience, clinical, services, policy, and epidemiology/population health. It is integrated within the Douglas Mental Health University Institute, a psychiatric hospital, and the much larger Montreal West-Island Integrated University Health and Social Services Centre, offering significant opportunities for carrying out collaborative research with various nearby mental health services.

The neuroscience community at McGill and in greater Montreal is one of the largest and most diverse in North America. Montreal offers an extremely high quality of life and is one of the most multicultural and lively cities in North America.

The successful candidate who satisfies the eligibility conditions of the Canada Research Chair (CRC) program may be supported by the University for nomination to a Tier 2 Chair in Neuroscience, which
provides protected time for research within a full-time academic appointment.

Nominees for Tier 2 Chair positions must be emerging scholars and hold the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, or possess the necessary qualifications to be appointed to these levels. A nominee who is more than 10 years from having earned their highest degree and has experienced legitimate career interruptions (e.g., maternity or parental leave, extended sick leave, clinical training, and family care) will be taken into consideration using the Tier 2 justification process:

Job Duties

  • Participate actively in all aspects of McGill’s academic mission (research, teaching, supervision of graduate students, and involvement in academic and administrative committees).
  • Conduct cutting-edge, externally funded independent research on animal models to study mechanisms of mental health. Candidates with research interests in neurodevelopment,neuroplasticity, neuroinflammation, epigenetics, or societal influences (e.g. stress, addiction) are particularly encouraged to apply. A methodological focus in phenogenomics and/or rodent brain mapping strategies would be an advantage.
  • Develop a leading profile in neuroscience, pursuing local and international collaborative links to advance the mission of the Douglas Research Centre and the goals of McGill’s Healthy Brains for Healthy Lives initiative.
  • Be successful in securing external grant funding and maintaining a stimulating and inclusive training environment that will attract strong trainees from diverse backgrounds.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • Applicants must have a PhD in Neuroscience, Health Science, or related fields with advanced PostDoctoral training.
  • A record of research / scholarly activity will be considered an asset.
  • Candidates who do not satisfy the CRC eligibility criteria for a Tier 2 Chair are nonetheless invited to apply for the position.
