DIRECTOR

Western University in London, Ontario, Canada seeks applicants for a Director of the Western Institute for Neuroscience (WIN) Research. Applicants who can demonstrate outstanding leadership in research, training, and outreach in the field of neuroscience are encouraged to apply. Applicants should hold a Ph.D. or MD or DDS or equivalent with relevant professional designation or licensure. Candidates should also be recognized internationally for research relevant to neuroscience. The successful candidate will hold a tenure or continuing academic appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor with (commensurate with qualifications and experience), in the most appropriate Department/School and Faculty. As Director, the candidate will hold a Western Research Chair (Leadership) and join an interdisciplinary network of collaborative researchers, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and/or clinician-scientists for a 3 to 5-year terms that is renewable once. The position will commence as soon as October 1, 2022 or as negotiated.

Reporting to the Vice President (Research), the Director will advance the WIN at Western University as an entity known internationally for its impact on research and knowledge mobilization across a range of specialties that include tools and technologies, basic science and applied research, in accordance with the research vision and mission. Towards this goal, the Director will identify, and enable access to, opportunities that expand the Institute’s research mission through the development of partnerships and fund-raising. Also, the Director will engage frequently with a Governing Board, the Executive Committee as well as internal and external Advisory Boards regarding strategy and vision. The Director will inspire research excellence and actively implement processes that mobilize and support interdisciplinary research teams within the Institute. The Director will be supported by the Institute’s excellent administrative team in implementing programs/activities. Also, the Director will be expected to lead their own research program as part of an interdisciplinary network of collaborative researchers in WIN.

The WIN was established in 2020 to bring together and enhance collaboration among basic and applied researchers and clinicians, with expertise in various disciplines and approaches. Post-doctoral fellow positions – Vulnerable Brain Lab at Western University

The Vulnerable Brain Laboratory (www.vulnerablebrain.com), in the Dept. Anatomy and Cell Biology at Western University is a cross-disciplinary, translational lab interested in interrogating the role of microglia activation in aging and disease/injury. We are currently recruiting 1-2 post-doctoral fellows with interests developing assays aimed at using circulating brain extracellular vesicles as a diagnostic tool for measuring brain inflammation and cognitive impairment in cell, experimental animal, and human samples. Additionally, we are searching for candidates with interests in extracellular vesicle trafficking and release, and proteomic/lipidomic analysis of extracellular vesicles and their cargo.

Previous experience some of the following is preferred: rodent based stroke models, cell culture, rodent behaviour, molecular biology, microscopy, histology, and mass spectrometry, including mass spectrometry imaging.

Position Description:

The Psychology Department at the University of Guelph invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level in the Neuroscience and Applied Cognitive Sciences (NACS) area. Salary will be negotiable and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Postdoctoral positions in Systems Neuroscience-University of Calgary

The Sargin lab at the University of Calgary is seeking motivated scientists with experience and interest in Neurophysiology and Systems Neuroscience. The goal of our research program is to understand the long-term effects of early life stress on brain function. We have fully-funded two postdoctoral positions available to start immediately. The projects will focus on 1) the activity of neural circuits in mouse models with social deficits and 2) serotonin physiology in mouse models of Alzheimer’s Disease. We use a variety of multidisciplinary techniques including stereotaxic viral delivery, slice electrophysiology, in vivo calcium imaging, optogenetics and behavior.

Ideal candidates will have a PhD in Neuroscience, Physiology or related fields and experience with patch clamp electrophysiology. Strong background in neuroscience or physiology is required. Experience with photometry or optogenetics and mouse behavior is advantageous.

Dr. Sargin’s research group is a part of the Department of Psychology, Hotchkiss Brain Institute, Alberta Children’s Hospital Research Institute and the Mathison Centre for Mental Health Research and Education. Postdoctoral Fellow – Behavioral Neuroscience/Drug Discovery, University of Toronto

The Martin Lab (www.martinpainlab.com) in the Department of Psychology at the University of Toronto is recruiting a full-time postdoctoral fellow in the area of Behavioral Neuroscience to screen novel small molecule therapies based on psychedelics and related compounds for mental health disorders. Initial experiments will require the candidate to establish an automated head-twitch detection system to assess novel compounds aimed at the serotonin 5-HT2A receptor. The laboratory has an extensive global network of academic, industrial, and governmental collaborators. Our group offers a highly dynamic, collaborative, innovative research environment with state-of-the-art technology and instruments.

Job description

There is a significant opportunity for improved next-generation therapies to address mental health disorders. The past several years have yielded a massive amount of preclinical and clinical knowledge regarding using psychedelic and related compounds to treat these disorders. There is a significant opportunity to deliver enhanced small molecule therapies building on the existing and emerging knowledge of psychedelics’ mechanism of action. The successful candidate will develop and lead a research project that tests the biological effects of novel small molecule therapeutics based on psychedelics.

Desired Skills and experience

The candidate should have completed their Ph.D. degree in Behavioral Neuroscience, Biology, Psychology, Pharmacology, or a related discipline. The ideal candidate has experience using rodent models to support preclinical development and screening of drug candidates.

 

Required:

  • Ph.D. in Behavioral Neuroscience, Biology, Psychology, Pharmacology, or related discipline.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Comprehensive and up-to-date knowledge of neuroscience with a background in receptor pharmacology
  • Collection, analysis and interpretation of data sets and proposal of follow-up experiments based on data trends
  • Troubleshoot and optimize automated behavioural analyses. Familiarity with DeepLabCut or a similar platform would be an asset but is unnecessary.
  • Track record of academic excellence
  • Strong skills in written and oral communication
  • Ability to work effectively independently and as a team member is a prerequisite.

Neurophysiology graduate student position at the University of Victoria, BC

We are inviting applications for a Master’s or PhD student position to study synaptic neurophysiology at the University of Victoria, in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. The selected candidate will join the team of Dr. Raad Nashmi’s laboratory.

Our lab is interested in understanding how cholinergic neurons affect the excitability and plasticity of neural circuits in the brain. To achieve this our lab employs a variety of techniques including whole-cell patch-clamp recordings of mouse brain slice tissue, optogenetics, UV uncaging of neurotransmitters and the study of mouse behaviours. Ultimately, we are interested in how specific neural circuit activity in the brain control or modulate specific behaviours. The Master’s or PhD candidate will examine how different neurotransmitter systems, including the cholinergic system, modifies the function of substantia nigral neurons in a spatial and temporal manner.

Applicants should have taken courses at the undergraduate or graduate level in physiology and/or neuroscience. Experience with electrophysiology would be an asset but is not necessary.

Postdoctoral Position in Neurobiology of Pain, McGill University

A postdoctoral position is available in the Alan Edwards Pain Management Unit and the Alan Edwards Centre for Research on Pain (AECRP) at McGill University under the supervision of Drs. Yoram Shir and Arkady Khoutorsky. We are looking for an independent and motivated researcher to work on multiple projects related to the role of the gut microbiome in different chronic pain conditions. The projects involve both clinical and basic science approaches, with the goal to characterize changes in the gut microbiome in chronic pain in humans, investigate the role of these changes in mediating pain and related co-morbidities, and develop strategies targeting the microbiome to alleviate pain. Canadian Excellence Research Chair (CERC) in Metabolism and the Brain, McGill University

The CERC Program supports Canadian universities in their efforts to build upon Canada’s reputation as a global leader in research and innovation through recruitment of world-leading researchers to Canada. CERC awards are amongst the most prestigious and generous available globally.

The CERC chair-holder will be mandated to build a multidisciplinary research team encompassing a diversity of lived experiences, identifies and career stages in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences with expertise at the intersection of metabolic disorders and neuroscience. The goal of this CERC is to establish a cutting-edge research program at this interface. This program will study the critical role of the brain in the development of obesity and diabetes and address the important roles of disordered metabolism in the development and progression of neurodegenerative diseases. The chair-holder will be expected to create links with industrial partners to accelerate translation of research results into improved health outcomes, while ensuring equitable access to the knowledge produced and to the social and health benefits that will flow from that knowledge.

The CERC program will build on existing strengths in the Metabolic Disorders and Complications (MeDiC) Program of the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC) and those in Neuroscience at the RI-MUHC, the Montreal Neurological Institute, and other McGill-affiliated sites. The chair-holder will be based at the RI-MUHC. The program will benefit from a dynamic environment that involves strong collaborative links between investigators working in central nervous system control of energy metabolism, neuroimaging, cognitive determinants of feeding, cognitive neuroscience and psychology of self-control, nutrition, aging, clinical and fundamental aspects of neurodegenerative disorders, and computational neuroscience from the Faculties of Medicine and Health Sciences, Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, and Science. This vibrant research and translational ecosystem is further enhanced by several McGill Research Centres and three McGill-affiliated hospitals. Technology platforms at these sites provide state of the art equipment and facilities for conducting leading edge research in fundamental science, clinical investigation and trials, health outcomes and epidemiology.

 

The successful candidate is expected to:

  • Possess a PhD and/or MD degree.
  • Be qualified to hold an academic position at the rank of Full Professor or be an Associate Professor who is expected to be promoted to Full Professor within one or two years of the nomination.
  • Have expertise at the interface of metabolic disorders and neuroscience research, in areas such as: obesity, diabetes, metabolism, neurodegenerative disorders, neuroimaging, or cognitive neuroscience as demonstrated by an excellent record of publications in internationally recognised scientific journals, success in obtaining external funding, and prior leadership roles in large-scale, interdisciplinary projects.
  • Familiarity with directing or collaborating on research employing varied methods at different levels of resolution, ranging from bench science to animal models, to studies in humans, including clinical-translational approaches, will be an asset.
  • Understand and personally champion equity, diversity and inclusion through the development of research relevant to marginalized communities, and the creation and coordination of teams in which members are from different backgrounds and areas of expertise.
  • Have the skills to promote a shared vision that will engage and motivate diverse collaborators and stakeholders in support of the program.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work well with internal and external partners and potential stakeholders, such as funding agencies, charities, patient advocacy groups, private companies, and the public.
  • Participate in all aspects of McGill’s academic mission, including teaching, supervision of graduate students, and service.

A further important role of the CERC chair holder will be to contribute to strong and innovative training in metabolism and neuroscience at McGill.
