The projects:

The Kurrasch Lab currently has three open postdoctoral positions (fully funded):

Project 1: Maternal microbiome and mechanistic impacts on the developing brain. This goal of this project is to define the mechanistic events that link adverse changes in the maternal gut to neurodevelopmental disorders in the offspring, using mice as a model system.

Project 2: Embryonic neural sex differentiation. The goal of this project is to determine the programs driving sex dimorphic development of the hypothalamus in mice.

Project 3: Comparative study of adult hypothalamic plasticity. The goal of this project is to determine the role of immature neurons in the adult hypothalamic parenchyma across small and large-brained species.

All projects employ a variety of cutting-edge techniques: single cell ‘omics, advanced microscopy (including iDISCO), in utero electroporation, live cell imaging, behavioral monitoring, human brain organoids (where relevant). Responsibilities include generating, analyzing, graphing, and presenting results, as well as writing and submitting manuscripts. The postdoctoral fellow will be expected to generate new ideas in collaboration with the Principal Investigator. Daily the scholar will interact with other laboratory personnel, including helping to train graduate and undergraduates.

The postdoctoral fellow will join Dr Deborah Kurrasch’s laboratory in the Hotchkiss Brain Institute and Alberta Children’s Hospital Research Institute in the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary. Each position is fully funded.

Tenure-Track Assistant/Associate Professor of Comparative Medicine

The Department of Biomedical Sciences at the Atlantic Veterinary College and the UPEI Faculty of Medicine invite applications for a full-time tenure-track position in Comparative Medicine. Appointment will be at the Assistant or Associate Professor Level.

The successful candidate will hold a cross-appointment between the Faculties of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine. Primary undergraduate teaching responsibilities will be in the Faculty of Medicine in one of several pre-clinical disciplines based on the candidate’s area of expertise. The candidate will be expected to develop a strong externally funded independent research program, teach graduate courses, and mentor graduate and undergraduate research students in Biomedical Sciences. Members of the Department of Biomedical Sciences conduct basic and applied research particularly in the areas of physiology, microanatomy, pharmacology and toxicology, cell and molecular biology and neuroscience. Biomedical Sciences offers accredited MSc and PhD degree programs and hosts world class laboratory and animal facilities with access to clinical veterinary specialty services.

The new UPEI Faculty of Medicine will house a joint MD degree in partnership with Memorial University of Newfoundland with an expected start date of September 2025.

The successful applicant will have a PhD with relevant post-doctoral experience and a significant record of publications in a discipline relevant to departmental strengths. Salary is commensurate with credentials and experience and is subject to budgetary approval.

The Department of Psychology in the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a two-year contractually limited-term appointment (CLTA) in the area of Behavioural Neuroscience. The appointment is at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream, with an expected start date of September 1, 2023 and ending on August 31, 2025.

Applicants must have earned a Ph.D. degree in Psychology, Neuroscience, Cognitive Science or a related area by the time of appointment or shortly thereafter. Applicants must also possess a record of excellence in teaching and teaching-related scholarly activities. We seek candidates whose teaching interests complement and strengthen our existing departmental strengths. Candidates must have teaching expertise in a degree granting program at the undergraduate level including lecture preparation and delivery. Additionally, candidates must possess a commitment to excellent pedagogical practices and interest in teaching-related scholarly activities.

Evidence of excellence in teaching and pedagogical inquiry can be demonstrated through teaching experience and accomplishments, awards and accolades, presentations at significant conferences, the teaching dossier submitted as part of the application (with required materials outlined below) as well as strong letters of reference from referees of high standing.

Tenure Track Position in Neuroscience, University of Saskatchewan

Applications are invited from qualified individuals for a tenure-track faculty position in neuroscience in the Western College of Veterinary Medicine’s Department of Veterinary Biomedical Sciences at the University of Saskatchewan.

Overview:

Applicants engaged in all research areas of neuroscience are encouraged to apply, but neuroscience at the behavioural or systems level that could be relevant to veterinary medicine is of particular interest. We use a platform for measuring and manipulating brain functions in mice performing visual cognitive tasks in combination with neurophotonic approaches such as calcium imaging (macroscopic or multi-photon) or optogenetics.
We are also interested in the development of technologies applied to neuroscience, in collaboration with companies.
The support of the lab (CIHR, NSERC) will guarantee a scholarship for trainees who do not yet have the support of funding organizations.

Master’s and PhD graduate student positions (Neuroscience) – University of Saskatchewan

We are inviting applications for Master’s and PhD students in behavioural and systems neuroscience at the University of Saskatchewan (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan).

Our Research:
The Botterill laboratory has two major research pillars, including a basic science pillar focused on studying the cells and circuits that support learning, memory, and affective behaviours and a health sciences pillar focused on studying the neurobiological mechanisms of temporal lobe epilepsy and its treatment. Our research programs primarily focus on the dentate gyrus subfield of the hippocampus to study how hilar mossy cells, dentate granule cells (including adult-born neurons), and GABAergic interneurons influence hippocampal function in health and disease.

Methods:

  1. Mouse stereotaxic surgery for injections of adeno-associated viruses (AAV), electrode recording assemblies, optic fibers, and cannulae for drug infusions, etc.
  2. Gain- and loss-of function manipulations via optogenetics and Designer Receptors Exclusively Activated by Designer Drugs (DREADDs)
  3. Mouse models of epilepsy (pilocarpine, kainic acid)
  4. 24/7 video electroencephalography (EEG) recordings in freely behaving mice
  5. Slice electrophysiology (whole cell patch clamp & extracellular field recordings)
  6. Mouse behavioural testing
  7. Behavioural pharmacology
  8. Biochemistry
  9. Epifluorescence and confocal microscopy

Eligibility requirements:

  • Strong academic record
  • Interest in behavioural neuroscience and/or epilepsy research
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Experience in rodent handling / behavioural neuroscience is preferred.
  • The ideal candidate will have experience with AAV injections, in vivo optogenetics, slice electrophysiology, and/or video EEG data collection & analysis.

Funding:
Successful candidates will receive graduate student stipends commensurate with the standard stipend amounts for graduate students in the Department of Anatomy, Physiology, and Pharmacology in the College of Medicine. Postdoctoral Researcher in Translational Rodent to Human Pain Models

About the position:

The Hildebrand Pain Lab (HildebrandPainLab.com) at Carleton University (and affiliated with the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute) invites applications for a postdoctoral research position investigating spinal mechanisms of nociceptive processing in rodent and human tissue models. This translational project involves combining cutting-edge high density multi-electrode array (MEA) recordings with the Hildebrand lab’s unique ability to collect highly viable tissue from human organ donors. Using this powerful combination, the applicant will investigate how molecular and cellular mechanisms of spinal excitability and pain processing are conserved and/or diverge across sex and species. Beyond these physiological questions, the applicant will test how targeting specific molecular players with current and potential future therapeutic compounds impacts excitability in spinal nociceptive circuits of both rodents and humans.

The skills, networks, and mentorship gained through this translational pain project will equip the candidate for potential careers in academic, industrial, and/or healthcare-related fields. Along with direct supervision and mentorship by Dr. Hildebrand, the applicant will be working alongside a neurosurgeon/clinical research scientist collaborator at the Ottawa Hospital, Dr. Eve Tsai (https://www.ohri.ca/profile/etsai), with the opportunity to participate in the surgical collection of spinal cord tissue from neurologic determination of death organ donors. Because of the high translational value of these rodent-to-human spinal cord physiology and pharmacology experiments, the applicant will also have the opportunity to work with and be mentored by pharmaceutical researchers that have ongoing collaborative research partnerships with the Hildebrand Pain Lab.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in a relevant field, with neuroscience-related research experience including performing electrophysiological, pharmacological, and/or biochemical experiments on ex vivo nervous system tissue. Expertise in analysis of large datasets and coding is also an asset. The position is full time, and salary will be commensurate with experience.
