Under the supervision of the Project Investigator, the Technologist II – RI will assist with neurobehavioural research. Specifically, our lab focuses on understanding the molecular and synaptic mechanisms underlying social memory using mouse and zebrafish models.

Your responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  • Performing electrophysiology, molecular biology, imaging and behavioural experiments
  • Maintaining animal colonies
  • Collecting experimental data, verifying results, preforming analysis and passing on findings
  • Working in collaboration with team of researchers and trainees

Qualifications:

  • Masters or Bachelor’s Degree in Physiology, Neuroscience, Molecular Genetics, Cell Biology or equivalent degree
  • Minimum 2 years relevant experience preferably in a basic neuroscience research laboratory setting
  • Minimum one (1) year of experience with molecular biology techniques (e.g. cloning, PCR, western blotting, preparation of buffers and standard solutions), genetic methods (e.g. the design and execution of genetic crosses), and microscopy techniques, including preparation of specimens for immunofluorescence microscopy
  • Experience with online molecular biology analysis tools (e.g. BLAST and primer design tools)
  • Experience working with mice and/or zebrafish is preferred
  • Electrophysiology experience is considered an asset
  • Demonstrated experience interpreting experimental results, troubleshooting experiments, and managing priorities and deadlines
  • Experience with computer software tools (e.g. Microsoft Office, R/SPSS, and Adobe Photoshop/Illustrator)
  • Coding experience (preferably Python) will be considered an asset
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, ability to exercise initiative and deal effectively with other lab members

The Centre for Brain Research (CBR) – under the guidance of Distinguished Professor Sir Richard Faull – is one of the leading brain research institutes in the world, acknowledged locally and internationally for its ground-breaking work in advancing neuroscience and healthcare. The CBR is a large and diverse university research centre spanning multiple faculties, which is engaged with over 400 staff and students encompassing disciplines and academic activities that focus on the prevention and treatment of brain health and wellbeing through research ranging from basic and laboratory science to clinical care and disorders and the promotion of population health and through engagement with communities.

The Chair in Translational Neuroscience will provide leadership in neuroscience research, clinical translation, education and knowledge exchange in order to improve patient outcomes in New Zealand and around the world. This new role will build upon the existing clinical and research strengths of the CBR to develop a vibrant academic research programme harnessing existing research excellence within the CBR and contributing to further research development across the neuroscience community.

The Professor would develop and lead a programme of internationally recognised study, which results in the discovery, integration, and application of new and existing knowledge, and facilitate the translation of latest innovations made in the laboratory into effective and sustainable clinical interventions and improved preventative measures in the community. The position would bridge the gap between basic and clinical research oriented towards translational opportunities, by creating stronger ties among scientists, engineers, clinicians, and the community, and by training the next generation of leaders in the field.

The opportunities afforded by a Chair are many and varied and include the development of new and innovative areas of research in the CBR and the University of Auckland and the development of linkages across New Zealand and in particular with the Brain Research New Zealand-Centre of Research Excellence and the Ageing Well-National Science Challenge. The role will also take advantage of existing linkages between the CBR’s world-class research and other research centres and universities in Australia, North America, Asia and Europe.

This appointment will be for a fixed term (renewable) of five years. The substantive academic appointment will be made according to the successful candidate’s research profile and academic experience, ideally at Full Professor level.

The Khokhar Lab researches the interactions between substance use and serious mental illness, with an eye toward treatment of these disorders using a variety of behavioural and circuit-interrogation methods. The Research Associate is responsible for the following main duties:

  • conducts behavioural experiments assessing the effects of cannabinoids in a variety of animal models of addiction (e.g., withdrawal, conditioned place preference and self-administration/free-access intake) and serious mental illness (e.g., prepulse inhibition, latent inhibition);
  • provides input with respect to appropriate methodology, procedures, equipment and standards to produce required research data;
  • applies specialized knowledge and principles to review, appraise and interpret published literature, summarize research findings, and draft scientific/technical reports, manuscripts, grant proposals;
  • establishes and maintains effective relationships with external partners, which may include coordinating of project plans, presenting research findings (may include presenting findings at conferences).

 

Education, Skills, Work Experience and other Requirements:

Job Summary:

Full-time Junior Technician position to perform animal testing within the Behavioral and Physiology Core in Roger Guindon Hall at the University of Ottawa.

The Core Facility is a state-of-the-art facility equipped to serve the research community at the University of Ottawa, its affiliated Research Institutes, and external users through contracts. The Core provides a time-efficient and cost-effective service for the design, execution, analysis, interpretation, and presentation of data resulting from use of the Core’s facilities.

The equipment enables a full battery of assays relevant to learning and memory, social behavior, sensory gating, motor function, and mood disorders. In addition, the core offers equipment in order to perform in vivo optogenetics, as well as measure various physiological outcomes using small animal telemetry (EEG, EMG, pressure) and non-invasive determinations of body composition and metabolic parameters.

The primary responsibility of this position will be to perform testing in rats using standardized protocols. This person will also aid other core staff as required in setup of equipment, and analysis of data obtained within the core.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Minimum of Undergraduate Degree in a related field, Technical college degree in a related field, and/or minimum of 1 year experience in research or working as an animal technician.
  • Practical experience with rats (prefer both mice and rats)
  • Experience using computer systems and software
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills (perfer Bilingual in French and English)

Independent Scientist (Focus: Preclinical/Translational Neurobiology) – Centre for Addiction and Mental Health

Position Description:

The Research Imaging Centre & Preclinical Research department at CAMH’s Campbell Family Mental Health Institute is dedicated on answering the most important and relevant questions that will contribute to a greater understanding of the healthy brain, the origins of mental illness, and progression as illness develops. The department’s priority is to drive research to generate and accelerate the development of novel treatments, with an emphasis on precision medicine.

We are seeking a strong candidate with expertise in preclinical neurobiology. The incumbent will play a pivotal leadership role in building a research program in translational neurobiology to study the neurophysiological, molecular and neuropharmacological bases of neurological and psychiatric disorders and treatments. The incumbent will work closely with experimental biologists, behaviouralists, and computational neuroscientists to design studies focused on mechanisms of major mental illness, including neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders. The incumbent will be expected to investigate mechanisms of psychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders with robust potential for clinical translation. Independent Scientist (Focus: Cognitive Neuroscience) – Centre for Addiction and Mental Health

Position Description:

The Research Imaging Centre (RIC) at CAMH’s Campbell Family Mental Health Institute is a state of the art imaging facility and is one of the few imaging centres in the world fully dedicated to research on mental illness and addiction. The RIC is home to a multi-disciplinary team of scientists, staff and research trainees with a primary objective of discovering new paths in brain chemistry, structure, function and behavior to better understand mental illnesses and advance treatments.

We are seeking a strong candidate with MR imaging experience to play a pivotal leadership role to build a research program in cognitive neuroscience using brain imaging techniques. The incumbent will work closely with Psychologists and Clinician Scientists devoted to the clinical impact of cognitive impairment, and mechanisms of cognitive dysfunction (e.g. neurophysiological) and disability to design cognitive neuroscience clinical trials to cut across psychopharmacology, brain stimulation and psychosocial interventions. The position will also support colleagues, particularly RIC scientists in experimental design and task-based fMRI; work in a collaborative inter-disciplinary environment that spans fundamental and clinical research and support a workplace that embraces diversity, encourages teamwork and complies with all applicable regulatory and legislative requirements.

Research Assistant – University of Victoria – Brown Lab

Background

Dr. Craig Brown’s laboratory in the Division of Medical Sciences at the University of Victoria in British Columbia is now accepting applications for a Full-time Research Assistant position to beginning in the fall of 2019. Dr. Brown’s research program is interested in the cellular and molecular mechanisms of brain plasticity and repair. To address these questions, the lab employs a multi-disciplinary approach, imaging the structure and function of neurons, microglial and endothelial cells in the living brain in tandem with genetic, biochemical, pharmacological and behavioural approaches.

Responsibilities/Duties

The primary responsibilities of the successful candidate will be to assist in ongoing research projects that include but are not limited to:

  • performing surgery in mice
  • protein and mRNA quantification and analysis (western blot, ELISA, qPCR, PCR, RNA seq, Gene Ontology analysis)

PRIMARY DUTIES

Our laboratory is interested in understanding how neural populations within the electrosensory system of weakly electric fish encode sensory input in order to give rise to perception and behavior. To achieve this goal, we employ a variety of approaches ranging from electrophysiology to behavior. Importantly, we have recently started using high-density arrays (e.g., neuropixel probes) in order to acquire data from large neural populations in awake behaving animals.
We are looking for a research associate who will assume a leadership role towards further developing the use of large density arrays towards recording from large neural populations simultaneously in awake behaving animals.
The successful applicant will be responsible for all aspects of our research program, such as performing surgeries on the animals, developing new stimulation protocols that better mimic natural stimuli experienced by these animals, performing electrophysiological recordings from neurons in awake behaving animals, recording the animal’s behavioral responses, using computational techniques to analyze the data, as well as being involved in all aspects of manuscript preparation and submission.
It is expected that the successful applicant will perform these duties diligently and mostly independently in consultation with the principal investigator.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

PhD in Biological Sciences, with at least 5 years of post-doctoral research experience working on the electrosensory system of weakly electric fish.

The set of required skills include: single and multiunit extracellular recording techniques from neurons in awake behaving weakly electric fish using high-density arrays, experimental surgery, behavioral assays, computer programming, and data analysis such as spike sorting using state of the art programs (e.g., kilosort), knowledge of Matlab and parallel computing on large clusters, as well as excellent organizational and communication skills.

Research Technician TCNLab at Western University

A Research Technician position is available immediately under the supervision of Dr. Lisa Saksida and Dr. Tim Bussey in the Translational Cognitive Neuroscience Lab (TCNLab) and BrainsCAN Rodent Cognition Core (RCC) at The University of Western Ontario. The research carried out by the TCNLab and the RCC teams combines neurobiological techniques for manipulating and observing brain circuits (e.g., DREADDs, optogenetics, pharmacology, transgenic and knockout mouse models, viral vectors, fibre photometry) with sophisticated analysis of cognition using mainly touchscreen-based assessment systems.

The Research Technician will assist with the research conducted in the TCNLab and the RCC at many levels. They will be expected to have a high degree of technical expertise and will help coordinate the general day-to-day operations in the TCNLab and in the RCC. They will gain proficiency in the scientific techniques used in the lab, and will develop and maintain SOPs and train lab members in their use. The Research Technician will be responsible for maintaining lab space, lab equipment and managing supplies. They will interact with work in collaboration with other lab staff, postdoctoral fellows and students.

Cognitive neuroscience in health and disease is a major research focus at Western, which is currently supported by BrainsCAN, a $66M Canada First Research Excellence Fund grant awarded to Western in 2016. The Robarts Research Institute and the Brain and Mind Institute together create a vibrant neuroscience research community with many opportunities for collaborations. Qualified applicants should have at minimum a 2 year Community College Diploma in Biotechnology, Veterinary Technician or related discipline, and 1-2 years experience in a neuroscience related research laboratory environment with experience in molecular and cellular analysis of brain tissue and in behavioural analysis of rodents. Undergraduate or Masters degree in Life Sciences, prior experience in rodent models of brain disease, molecular and cellular biology, optogenetics and/or DREADDs will be an asset. Professor and Scientific Director, York Visual Neurophysiology Centre, York University

York University (https://www.yorku.ca/) seeks a Scientific Director for our current and planned visual neuroscience facilities. This individual will be appointed as a full-time tenured professorial position at the Associate Professor or Full Professor level, to commence as early as January 1, 2020.

The Scientific Director appointment will last 5 years (renewable) and will oversee, as Principal Investigator, the $8.2M equipment budget component of a planned $32M neurophysiology facility. The individual will provide guidance for ongoing laboratory facility planning and development, for recruiting facility staff and relevant faculty, and for coordinating research activities and scientific staff within the facility. This is a Research-Enhanced Faculty position partially funded by the Vision: Science to Application (VISTA) program http://vista.info.yorku.ca/. The applicant will receive administrative support for their Directorial duties, immediately available lab space, enhanced start-up funding for their own research, additional annual research funds, a reduced undergraduate teaching load, and competitive access to general VISTA research and training funds. This is a university-level search: the successful candidate will be affiliated with the Department and Faculty that best suits their research and teaching interests.

The successful candidate will hold a PhD in a neuroscience-related discipline, must show evidence of outstanding scientific leadership, and have expertise in the design of in vivo neurophysiology research facilities. The applicant will combine leading-edge neurophysiological techniques (such as multi-neuron recording), behavioral recordings, and computational analyses of data from in vivo experimental models of visual function and/or dysfunction in areas such as perception, cognition, sensorimotor integration, or multisensory integration. We particularly encourage candidates who use or develop innovative technologies. The applicant should have an outstanding research record demonstrating scholarly eminence and a proven ability to attract substantial peer-reviewed external research funding and to train successful graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. This individual will have an international reputation and record of international research collaboration. All VISTA members are expected to engage in transdisciplinary collaborations with other members, as well as other academic / non-academic partners.

VISTA is a world-leading institutional research program, partially funded by the Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF), which focuses on the intersection between biological and computational research. VISTA is located at York University in Toronto Ontario, Canada’s third largest university. The candidate will also have access to a research-dedicated MRI suite and substantial facilities for visual psychophysics, human visual neuroscience, and virtual reality.
