The appointment will be a full-time tenured position normally at the rank of Associate or Full Professor. The CRC Tier 1 program is one of Canada’s most prestigious Research Chair programs, and this position will be funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), whose mission is to support the discoveries and innovations that improve our health and strengthen our health care system, consistent with the U of G mission “To Improve Life”. The proposed CRC Tier I (CIHR) in Cellular and Molecular Mechanisms of Disease will be a position of strategic importance to the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology, the College of Biological Science and the University of Guelph. Intersecting with important research themes in the University’s Strategic Research Plan, including fundamental science and its application and animal and human health and wellbeing, this position will also advance the rapidly growing program in One Health at U of G. The proposed CRC will be open to researchers studying any prokaryotic or eukaryotic system, and research in infectious diseases, cancer or neurological disorders represent priority areas. This position will thus enhance existing excellence at the University of Guelph in the realm of cellular/molecular basis of disease and connect multiple departments and colleges, which are home to research programs spanning cardiac and kidney disease, tumour progression, neurological pathologies, nutrition, microbial communities and antimicrobial resistance, and intersect with programs in translational disease research. New knowledge arising from these programs is already leading to the development of novel approaches to combat disease, and the proposed CRC will be critical to continue the forward momentum in this regard.

The successful candidate will join a dynamic, multidisciplinary, research-intensive department with 44 faculty members who study diverse biological systems at levels from molecules to cells. The Department is the home of undergraduate programs in Biochemistry, Microbiology, Molecular Biology & Genetics, Neuroscience, and contributes to programs in Biological Science, Biomedical Science, and Plant Science. Graduate training activities include programs offering M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Molecular and Cellular Biology, and a Master of Biotechnology degree. Faculty members also participate in cross-department programs, including Bioinformatics, Biophysics, Neuroscience, Plant Science, and Toxicology. The successful applicant will be expected to develop a creative and independent research program, sustained by external funding from national/provincial agencies, and contribute to undergraduate and graduate training.
The CRC holder must be an outstanding and innovative world-class researcher whose accomplishments have made a major impact in their field; be recognized internationally as leaders in their field; have a proven track record of sustained extramurally funded cutting-edge research; and a superior record of attracting and supervising graduate students and postdoctoral fellows (taking into account different practices in the relevant field or discipline). As a chairholder, the successful candidate will be expected to develop an original, innovative research program of the highest quality; attract CIHR and other Tri-Agency funding; take leadership on large, competitive, collaborative grants; develop and retain excellent trainees; contribute to innovative and effective knowledge translation and transfer activities in collaboration with collegiate and institutional research offices, and be a prominent leader in CBS and at the U of G.

Tenure Track Position in Neuroscience at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine – University of Saskatchewan

Applications are invited from qualified individuals for a tenure-track faculty position in Neuroscience within the Department of Veterinary Biomedical Sciences https://wcvm.usask.ca/departments/bio-medical.php of the Western College of Veterinary Medicine. Applicants engaged in all research areas of Neuroscience are encouraged to apply, but Neuroscience at the Behavioural or Systems level that could be relevant to veterinary medicine is of particular interest. Salary bands for this position are as follows: Assistant Professor: $98,178 to $117,978; Associate Professor: $117,978 to $137,778. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Canadian Excellence Research Chair (CERC) in Metabolism and the Brain, McGill University

McGill Faculty f Medicine and Health Sciences logoThe Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at McGill University is seeking to recruit an internationally recognised scientist with a strong track record in innovation and research leadership to direct a new program in “Metabolism and the Brain” that is supported by a prestigious CERC award. The CERC Program supports Canadian universities in their efforts to build upon Canada’s reputation as a global leader in research and innovation through recruitment of world-leading researchers to Canada. CERC awards are amongst the most prestigious and generous available globally.

The CERC chair-holder will be mandated to build a multidisciplinary research team encompassing a diversity of lived experiences, identifies and career stages in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences with expertise at the intersection of metabolic disorders and neuroscience. The goal of this CERC is to establish a cutting-edge research program at this interface. This program will study the critical role of the brain in the development of obesity and diabetes and address the important roles of disordered metabolism in the development and progression of neurodegenerative diseases. The chair-holder will be expected to create links with industrial partners to accelerate translation of research results into improved health outcomes, while ensuring equitable access to the knowledge produced and to the social and health benefits that will flow from that knowledge.

The CERC program will build on existing strengths in the Metabolic Disorders and Complications (MeDiC) Program of the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC) and those in Neuroscience at the RI-MUHC, the Montreal Neurological Institute, and other McGill-affiliated sites. The chair-holder will be based at the RI-MUHC. The program will benefit from a dynamic environment that involves strong collaborative links between investigators working in central nervous system control of energy metabolism, neuroimaging, cognitive determinants of feeding, cognitive neuroscience and psychology of self-control, nutrition, aging, clinical and fundamental aspects of neurodegenerative disorders, and computational neuroscience from the Faculties of Medicine and Health Sciences, Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, and Science. This vibrant research and translational ecosystem is further enhanced by several McGill Research Centres and three McGill-affiliated hospitals. Technology platforms at these sites provide state of the art equipment and facilities for conducting leading edge research in fundamental science, clinical investigation and trials, health outcomes and epidemiology.

 

The successful candidate is expected to:

  • Possess a PhD and/or MD degree.
  • Be qualified to hold an academic position at the rank of Full Professor or be an Associate Professor who is expected to be promoted to Full Professor within one or two years of the nomination.
  • Have expertise at the interface of metabolic disorders and neuroscience research, in areas such as: obesity, diabetes, metabolism, neurodegenerative disorders, neuroimaging, or cognitive neuroscience as demonstrated by an excellent record of publications in internationally recognised scientific journals, success in obtaining external funding, and prior leadership roles in large-scale, interdisciplinary projects.
  • Familiarity with directing or collaborating on research employing varied methods at different levels of resolution, ranging from bench science to animal models, to studies in humans, including clinical-translational approaches, will be an asset.
  • Understand and personally champion equity, diversity and inclusion through the development of research relevant to marginalized communities, and the creation and coordination of teams in which members are from different backgrounds and areas of expertise.
  • Have the skills to promote a shared vision that will engage and motivate diverse collaborators and stakeholders in support of the program.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work well with internal and external partners and potential stakeholders, such as funding agencies, charities, patient advocacy groups, private companies, and the public.

A further important role of the CERC chair holder will be to contribute to strong and innovative training in metabolism and neuroscience at McGill. The Rady Faculty of Health Sciences is a major center of interdisciplinary health sciences education and research in Canada, offering a full range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs in biomedical sciences and health professions. The DPT has a rich history of excellence in research and education in biomedical and clinical pharmacology and is committed to providing high quality programming at the graduate and undergraduate levels across all Rady Faculty of Health Sciences constituent Colleges of Medicine, Pharmacy, Rehabilitation Sciences, Dentistry and Nursing. The DPT also contributes heavily to undergraduate programming in the Faculty of Science (BSc) and the Interdisciplinary Health program Bachelor of Health Sciences (BHSc) curriculum.

DPT faculty members maintain robust, internationally recognized research programs maintained by extramural operating and infrastructure grants from local, national and international sources. Foundational DPT research themes include neurosciences, cancer biology, clinical pharmacology, and cardiovascular and metabolic sciences. Research strengths are cultivated by leveraging partnerships between DPT and partner research institutes in Manitoba, including the Kleysen Institute for Advanced Medicine, St. Boniface Hospital Research, Children’s Hospital Research Institute of Manitoba and the CancerCare Manitoba Research Institute. DPT neuroscience theme members and their trainees are closely networked with other neuroscientists across several departments by the Manitoba Neuroscience Network (http://manitobaneuroscience.ca), which serves as a virtual institute that unites the research, training and outreach activities of over 70 principal investigators of neuroscience in Manitoba.

The successful candidate will have an MD and/or PhD, a minimum of two years of postdoctoral experience and a highly productive track-record of impactful scholarly activity in the neurosciences. Applicants with expertise across all neurosciences are encouraged to apply but preferred areas of research that may allow commitment of additional institutional resources include mechanisms underpinning synaptic function and brain development in Autism Spectrum Disorders, and the neurobiology of depression, anxiety, eating disorders, or speech and related disorders. Research programs that investigate mechanisms at the single cell level, scaling up to whole animal and behavioral outcomes are encouraged. The appointed candidate is expected to teach in graduate and undergraduate DPT educational programs and develop a rigorous, well-funded research program. The appointee will integrate into the vibrant DPT neurosciences theme, which currently consists of 8 principal investigators at the Kleysen Institute for Advanced Medicine and the St. Boniface Hospital Albrechtsen Research Centre. These sites offer state-of-the-art capabilities in live cell imaging (ex vivo and in vivo), electrophysiology, optogenetics, multimodal small animal neuroimaging, human PET and MRI, rodent genetic model creation, behavioral investigation and molecular neurobiological approaches. A generous startup package will be available to establish a world-class research program. Additionally, the University of Manitoba has a long track-record of reserving institutional infrastructure funding opportunities (e.g. Canada Foundation for Innovation John R. Evans Leadership fund) for early career investigators.

The Department of Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster University Hamilton Health Sciences invite applicants for an Academic Physician to join the Division of Neurology. This is a full-time faculty position for a period of three years (renewable).  Academic rank will be commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience.

The ideal candidate will be a fully trained and experienced Adult Epileptologist to join our Adult Epilepsy Department. McMaster is a District Epilepsy Center in the province of Ontario, serving a catchment area of over two million people. We have a three bed Epilepsy Monitoring Unit and are involved in working up complex cases for epilepsy surgery. We currently have four Epileptologists, with two doing epilepsy as their full-time practice. The Epilepsy program is well supported by a Nurse Practitioner, clerk, Neuropsychologist, and Neuroradiologists, amongst others. We have local fMRI and 3T MRI capabilities. Our tertiary care teaching center has a large residency training program, and we are actively involved in residency teaching and training. We have also been involved in fellowship training. There are many outpatient clinics with subspecialty areas including first seizure, transition from pediatrics, and Tuberous Sclerosis. We have a busy inpatient and outpatient EEG service, covering four hospitals in the city.

We are looking for an Adult Epileptologist with a training in Neurology and a two-year fellowship in Epilepsy and EEG. Our ideal candidate is mid-career with significant experience in the workup and management of complex epilepsy surgery cases. This individual has good experience with SEEG, cortical stimulation, mapping, and corticography and would be willing and able to help us set up a complete surgical unit at our center.  The ability to read evoked potentials, or a willingness to learn, would be helpful in addition to excellent EEG skills. Passing the CSCN EEG exam would be necessary if not already completed.  The candidate would be able and willing to read continuous ICU EEGs.

The successful candidate will be a full-time member of the Division of Neurology and will be expected to contribute to the academic mission of the Faculty and Division. Research interests and publications will bolster our academic contributions. Commitment to excellence in adult epilepsy, postgraduate neurology, and undergraduate medicine, education and training is expected. We are also looking for a team player with excellent communication skills, who will provide high quality patient care and function well in multidisciplinary groups. More specifically, we seek an individual with leading expertise in one or more of the following areas: molecular, cellular, synaptic, physiology and pharmacology applied to understanding brain circuits in health and disease. The successful candidate will be expected to work collaboratively with the team of basic scientists, clinician investigators and clinicians conducting a broad spectrum of research in the brain research environment, as well as other institutes and departments in the Cumming School of Medicine to develop a world-class research program.

The position provides 75% protected time for research with the expectation that the candidate establish a vigorous, sustainable, externally funded research program. The successful candidate will contribute to teaching and graduate student supervision within a dynamic and collaborative environment. The appointee will have access to state-of-the-art core infrastructure including key neurotechnologies located at the HBI advanced microscopy and CSM optogenetic facilities and strong pre-clinical and human neuroimaging, bioinformatics, genomics, non-invasive neuromodulation, and MR-guided focused ultrasound programs. The successful applicant will be expected to develop a CIHR-fundable research program in or related to systems neuroscience focused on studying the organization and function of neural circuits and how they are altered in brain disorders (examples include, but are not limited to, schizophrenia, affective disorders, autism, epilepsy, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and stroke). Experience using viral vector-based approaches to selectively manipulate or measure activity of discrete populations of brain cells in vivo will be considered an asset. Assistant or Associate Professor in Visuomotor Neurophysiology in the School of Kinesiology and Health Science – York University

Integral to a University-wide initiative in visual neuroscience, the School of Kinesiology and Health Science invites highly qualified candidates to apply for a tenure-track professorial-stream appointment in Visuomotor Neurophysiology at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor to commence July 1, 2022. This is a Research Enhanced Faculty position partially funded by the Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF) Vision: Science to Application (VISTA) program http://vista.info.yorku.ca/. The applicants will receive enhanced start-up funding, additional annual research funds, a reduced undergraduate teaching load, and competitive access to general VISTA research and training funds. The candidate will join the large community of vision scientists in the Centre for Vision Research (http://www.cvr.yorku.ca/), and the position is linked to and supported in part by the Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF) Vision: Science to Application (VISTA) program http://vista.info.yorku.ca/), an $8.2M equipment grant from the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI), and a new world-class facility for visual neuroscience research. The applicant will join other scientists within York’s new neurophysiology research facility. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. All York University positions are subject to budgetary approval.

Applicants must have a PhD in movement neuroscience or a closely related field, with a preferred minimum of three years of relevant postdoctoral experience. Applicants will have documented expertise working with neurophysiological or other brain monitoring and manipulation techniques to investigate the neural basis of visually guided motor functions in non-human experimental models. They may also develop models of disease. Applicants will be expected to monitor movements of the eyes, head, limbs and/or body for processes such as eye-hand coordination, reaching, object manipulation or navigation in response to visual stimuli. Experience with wireless recordings during free motion is not necessary but would be an asset. The ability to integrate molecular biology or other cutting-edge techniques into this program, work with a transdisciplinary team of researchers, and translate the research for real world applications would each be assets. Other techniques may include investigations into human or non-human behaviour, functional neuroimaging, electrophysiology studies, or computational modeling.

The candidate should demonstrate or show a clear promise of an independent program of research and emerging research eminence, as evidenced by a solid publication record in refereed journals and promise of or demonstrated ability to attract external funding. Evidence of graduate student mentorship, leadership experience, and broad-based research collaboration is also preferred. Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence or promise of research excellence of a recognized international calibre as demonstrated in: the research statement; a record of publications (or forthcoming publications) with significant journals in the field; presentations at major conferences; awards and accolades; and strong recommendations from referees of high standing. The candidate must be suitable for prompt appointment to the Faculty of Graduate Studies and will have the opportunity to apply for membership in York’s Neuroscience Graduate Diploma Program.

Research laboratories will be situated in a new world-class facility dedicated to visual neurophysiology with human-like (frontal-eyed, capable of prehension) species. The successful candidate must be qualified to use the CFI-funded equipment in the facility, which will include traditional visual neuroscience labs and will be equipped with kiosk and open arena testing spaces that facilitate the study of active vision, as well as surgical space, wet laboratory space, and proximity to a research-dedicated MRI.

The candidate will be required to teach at the undergraduate plus graduate levels and supervise graduate students in the School of Kinesiology and Health Science. Teaching experience with demonstrated use of pedagogical innovation using technology-enhanced learning and/or experiential education are definite assets. Pedagogical innovation in high priority areas, such as experiential education and technology enhanced learning, is preferred. The incumbent will be expected to contribute through service to the School, Faculty and University. They will also contribute to York’s teaching and research priorities and inter-Faculty Neuroscience Programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
