Guo Li Ming
Perelman Professor of Neuroscience at the University of Pennsylvania
Adjunct Professor, The Solomon H. Snyder Department of Neuroscience, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine
Dr. Guo-li Ming studies brain development to understand the molecular mechanisms that lead to developmental neurological disorders. Her laboratory uses two complementary model systems, the genetically modified mouse and patient-derived induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) model systems.
Using a combination of experimental approaches that include molecular biology, biochemistry, mouse genetics, imaging, electrophysiology, electron microscopy, optogenetic manipulations, next generation sequencing, and behavioral tests to study neural development, her laboratory has made important discoveries about brain development.
Her recent work has provided clues to explain how the zika virus causes previously undetected changes in the brain. Her team has also shown that nerve injury can promote production of repair proteins by modifying pre-transcribed mRNA in neurons, and that such epitranscriptomic modification regulates brain development.
These discoveries lead to a better understanding of the biological causes underlying complex psychiatric disorders.
