The Research Centre of CHUM (CRCHUM) in partnership with the Department of Neurosciences of the Université de Montréal (UdeM) is seeking applicants for a principal investigator position at the rank of assistant or associate research professor in the field of neuroscience and the specific use of zebrafish for the study of adult neurological disorders. The ideal candidate will be zebrafish neurobiologist with a strong expertise in transgenic, genetic and genetic regulation.

The new principal investigator will play a key role in complementing the research strengths of the CRCHUM especially in neurosciences. The mission of the CRCHUM-Neuroscience research axis is to elucidate the biological, environmental and social mechanisms of adult neurological diseases and to develop novel and innovative therapies to prevent, treat or cure them. The research activities incorporate clinical, basic and translational research and focus on neurodegeneration/neurorepair, neuroimmunology, neurovascular/stroke and epilepsy. The CRCHUM neuroscience research activities build on complementary and well-integrated teams and a vast array of cutting-edge approaches. Moreover, multiple research groups within the Faculty of Medicine and the larger Montreal research community offer numerous opportunities for collaboration. Montreal hosts one of the biggest neuroscience communities in North America. UdeM offers excellent training in neurosciences with undergraduate and graduate programs in neuroscience. Requirements

The applicant’s research program should address fundamental biological questions relevant to the physiopathology and treatment of adult neurological diseases, from the cellular/molecular to network levels, using zebrafish approaches. The candidate will have access to a large fish facility.

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. degree, with postdoctoral experience and a strong publication record in zebrafish neurosciences. Candidates will be expected to develop an innovative, internationally recognized, externally funded research program and contribute to teaching as well as to some administrative and academic activities at CRCHUM and UdeM.

The ideal candidate will be an energetic, interdisciplinary, and visionary early career scholar committed to the study of Neuroscience and Cognition preferably with a research program that uses computational methods and theory. The successful candidate will hold a Ph.D. and preferably post-doctoral experience or other distinguishing attributes in Biology, Computer Science, Psychology, Neuroscience or Neurobiology or a related field. The successful candidate will carry out research and develop a competitive research program that emphasizes mechanistic, comparative, or evolutionary aspects of the neurophysiology, molecular, or cognitive processes underlying behaviour. Tenure Track Faculty Position in Behavioural Neuroscience – Concordia University, Montreal

The Department of Psychology at Concordia University in Montreal invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in behavioural neuroscience. The ideal candidate should have a record of innovative research on fundamental neurobiological mechanisms of behaviour using rodents as a model species.

Research approaches including but not limited to molecular, cellular, systems, and computational neuroscience will be considered. This position will build on existing strengths in research on addiction, motivation, cognition, learning and memory, biological rhythms and neurophysiology at Concordia. Professor and Scientific Director, York Visual Neurophysiology Centre, York University

York University (https://www.yorku.ca/) seeks a Scientific Director for our current and planned visual neuroscience facilities. This individual will be appointed as a full-time tenured professorial position at the Associate Professor or Full Professor level, to commence as early as January 1, 2020.

The Scientific Director appointment will last 5 years (renewable) and will oversee, as Principal Investigator, the $8.2M equipment budget component of a planned $32M neurophysiology facility. The individual will provide guidance for ongoing laboratory facility planning and development, for recruiting facility staff and relevant faculty, and for coordinating research activities and scientific staff within the facility. This is a Research-Enhanced Faculty position partially funded by the Vision: Science to Application (VISTA) program http://vista.info.yorku.ca/. The applicant will receive administrative support for their Directorial duties, immediately available lab space, enhanced start-up funding for their own research, additional annual research funds, a reduced undergraduate teaching load, and competitive access to general VISTA research and training funds. This is a university-level search: the successful candidate will be affiliated with the Department and Faculty that best suits their research and teaching interests.

The successful candidate will hold a PhD in a neuroscience-related discipline, must show evidence of outstanding scientific leadership, and have expertise in the design of in vivo neurophysiology research facilities. The applicant will combine leading-edge neurophysiological techniques (such as multi-neuron recording), behavioral recordings, and computational analyses of data from in vivo experimental models of visual function and/or dysfunction in areas such as perception, cognition, sensorimotor integration, or multisensory integration. We particularly encourage candidates who use or develop innovative technologies. The applicant should have an outstanding research record demonstrating scholarly eminence and a proven ability to attract substantial peer-reviewed external research funding and to train successful graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. Independent Scientist, Artificial Intelligence | Krembil Centre for Neuroinformatics at CAMH

The Krembil Centre for Neuroinformatics at CAMH is hiring world-leading research scientists to transform our understanding of mental health by organizing, integrating, analyzing, visualizing and modelling data across all levels of the brain — from genes to circuits to behaviour. This multimodal data is gathered across the clinical environment, including genetic, epigenetic, MRI, DTI, fMRI, hd-EEG, actigraphy and electronic medical record (EMR) data.

Teams employ state-of-the-art techniques, including topological data analysis, machine learning and multiscale computational modeling to accelerate the identification and treatment of mental health disorders. Research is performed in an open, team science environment, with a focus on global collaboration and an emphasis on reproducible data-driven research and a patient-centric approach. The Centre operates as an incubator for medical technologies to identify, manage and treat mental illness, while shaping policy at national and global levels.

As an Independent Scientist for Artificial Intelligence, you will build and lead a team to develop machine learning techniques that contribute to data-driven definitions of mental health and brain disorders. Your team at the Krembil Centre will integrate machine learning, predictive models and decision support research into CAMH, and collaborate with clinical and research scientists on early identification of mental health issues to improve care, clinical outcomes and patient engagement.

In this key role you will work collaboratively with the Data and Knowledge Engineering teams who develop and maintain the BrainHealth Databank, a semantic data lake and knowledge graph that integrates multiscale and multimodal data, including genomics, epigenetics, blood markers, structural and functional brain imaging, EEG, EMRs, and behavioural data obtained from the 30,000+ patients seen annually at CAMH, plus information contained in provincial-level healthcare databases.

As an Independent Scientist for AI, you will be cross-appointed as a Vector Institute faculty member and also maintain departmental and graduate school faculty status at the University of Toronto (U of T). Candidates should have a PhD in Computer Science or a similar field, and 3+ years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education, experience and demonstrated ability. This will include demonstrated experience in the application of machine learning to a practical domain, in the development of organizational AI/data systems, and in fostering collaborations between diverse research and clinical groups (both internally and externally). Your track record will also demonstrate competence in publishing in high-impact peer-reviewed journals, obtaining funding from various sources, disseminating research at formal scientific meetings, and participating in the education and supervision of students and trainees.

Position Description

The Department of Psychiatry at McGill and the Douglas Hospital Research Centre are currently inviting applications for a tenure-track faculty position in the field of neuroscience and mental health at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor.

This position is part of the Healthy Brains for Healthy Lives (HBHL) initiative, which is a high profile, high priority multidisciplinary and cross-sectoral initiative located at McGill University made possible with support from the Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF). HBHL builds on McGill’s scientific excellence and global leadership in neuroscience.

The Douglas Hospital Research Centre brings together scientists and clinicians spanning a full range of mental health research, including neuroscience, clinical, services, policy, and epidemiology/population health. It is integrated within the Douglas Mental Health University Institute, a psychiatric hospital, and the much larger Montreal West-Island Integrated University Health and Social Services Centre, offering significant opportunities for carrying out collaborative research with various nearby mental health services.

The neuroscience community at McGill and in greater Montreal is one of the largest and most diverse in North America. Montreal offers an extremely high quality of life and is one of the most multicultural and lively cities in North America.

The successful candidate who satisfies the eligibility conditions of the Canada Research Chair (CRC) program may be supported by the University for nomination to a Tier 2 Chair in Neuroscience, which
provides protected time for research within a full-time academic appointment.

Nominees for Tier 2 Chair positions must be emerging scholars and hold the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, or possess the necessary qualifications to be appointed to these levels. A nominee who is more than 10 years from having earned their highest degree and has experienced legitimate career interruptions (e.g., maternity or parental leave, extended sick leave, clinical training, and family care) will be taken into consideration using the Tier 2 justification process:

Job Duties

  • Participate actively in all aspects of McGill’s academic mission (research, teaching, supervision of graduate students, and involvement in academic and administrative committees).
  • Conduct cutting-edge, externally funded independent research on animal models to study mechanisms of mental health. Candidates with research interests in neurodevelopment,neuroplasticity, neuroinflammation, epigenetics, or societal influences (e.g. stress, addiction) are particularly encouraged to apply. A methodological focus in phenogenomics and/or rodent brain mapping strategies would be an advantage.
  • Develop a leading profile in neuroscience, pursuing local and international collaborative links to advance the mission of the Douglas Research Centre and the goals of McGill’s Healthy Brains for Healthy Lives initiative.
  • Be successful in securing external grant funding and maintaining a stimulating and inclusive training environment that will attract strong trainees from diverse backgrounds.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • Applicants must have a PhD in Neuroscience, Health Science, or related fields with advanced PostDoctoral training.
  • A record of research / scholarly activity will be considered an asset.
  • Candidates who do not satisfy the CRC eligibility criteria for a Tier 2 Chair are nonetheless invited to apply for the position.

The Department of Pathology in the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Manitoba invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level, commencing on July 1, 2019, or on a date mutually agreed upon. The Department seeks an emerging scholar with a commitment to excellence in research and teaching. Outstanding candidates with expertise in the disciplines of neurobiology / neuropathology will be preferred, to complement or extend the department’s strengths in perinatal and forensic neuropathology. A competitive start-up package will be provided. Salary and rank will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. The new recruit is expected to develop and maintain a rigorous and independently funded research program. Other duties will include undergraduate teaching, graduate teaching and supervision, and service-related activities.

The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. and at least 2 years relevant post-doctoral research experience;
a track record of high quality scholarly research leading to peer reviewed publications; will have, or demonstrate the potential to establish an independent, innovative, scholarly, externally fundable research program and will have demonstrated strength in or strong potential for teaching contributions. Experience working with human tissue is particularly desirable. Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated evidence of the ability to work in a collaborative environment.

The Rady Faculty of Health Sciences is located at the Bannatyne campus of the University of Manitoba, in connection with the Health Sciences Centre, which is the largest health care facility in the province. The Department currently has over 50 full-time pathologists (most affiliated with Shared Health Manitoba), including 3 neuropathologists (one of whom is a past Tier 1 Canada Research Chair), and 1 other full-time tenured faculty member. The Department offers an MSc program. Cross appointment with a suitable basic science department allows the candidate to host PhD students. The Department has a well-equipped research facility including: Zeiss PALM MicroBeam laser microdissection system, Zeiss Apotome structured illumination fluorescence microscope, Typhoon FLA9500 variable mode laser scanner and imaging system, whole slide scanning systems, cell culture equipment, qRT-PCR, cryostat, freezers, and considerable bench space. A complete range of histology and conventional electron microscopy services is available through the affiliated hospital pathology department. The Division of Medical Sciences invites applications for a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair (CRC) in the Neurobiology of Aging and Cognition to complement and broaden the research interests of our core group of Neuroscience researchers. We welcome applications from basic scientists who have a primary focus on the molecular mechanisms of aging in the nervous system, with a strong indication of translational potential for neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer disease, Vascular dementia, Parkinson disease, Huntington disease, Frontotemporal dementia and related diseases. Experience in the use (and/or development) of animal models of cognitive disorders affecting the elderly and studies that range in scope from molecular to behavioural will be especially valued (including a broad range of approaches, like microscopy, bioinformatics, computational neuroscience, and/or combinations thereof). The successful applicant will be nominated by the University for a Tier 2 CRC and, upon approval by the CRC Secretariat, will then be offered a tenure-track or tenured appointment at the appropriate rank, commensurate with qualifications and experience. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2020.

This CRC recruitment is part of a broad strategy to expand and raise the profile of research in aging and health at the University of Victoria. Three other Tier 2 CRCs in related areas of aging research are being recruited in addition to this position. The four new CRCs will be expected to engage with the UVic Institute on Aging and Lifelong Health (https://www.uvic.ca/research/centres/aging/), which has a 25-year history of high-quality research, community outreach, and trainee support. Research strengths in the Institute on Aging and Lifelong Health are currently organized around cognitive health, lifelong health, and vulnerability and frailty. The new recruits will benefit from administrative support and collaborative opportunities provided within the Institute.

Tier 2 CRCs are one of Canada’s premier early career recognition and recruitment programs, and are intended for exceptional emerging scholars (i.e., candidate must have been an active researcher in their field for fewer than 10 years at the time of nomination). However, applicants who are more than 10 years from having earned their highest degree (and where career breaks exist) may have their eligibility for a Tier 2 Chair assessed through the program’s Tier 2 justification process. The Division of Medical Sciences (DMS) was established to promote scholarship and innovation in medical education at the University of Victoria and to support the University of Victoria’s ongoing commitment to an integrated and multidisciplinary approach to health research. The successful nominee will complement and expand the current expertise of neuroscientists in the DMS. With its intimate and collaborative research environment and as host of the Neuroscience Graduate Program, the DMS allows for direct and frequent interaction among PIs, thereby facilitating an interchange of ideas between postdocs and students across labs. We are also a group with a commitment to diversification across our ranks, particularly, although not limited to: racialization, marginalized sexualities, gender identity, Indigeneity and disability.

Requirements
The successful nominee will have a PhD in Neuroscience, Cell Biology, Biology or related field, as well as postdoctoral training. They will have demonstrated potential to develop an externally funded, independent, original and innovative research program that focuses on important questions in the Neurobiology of Aging and Cognition with relevance to human health. The successful nominee will have also demonstrated the potential to achieve international recognition in their field within the next five to ten years. The candidate will offer evidence of high-quality teaching and supervision, having the potential to attract, develop and retain excellent trainees, students and future researchers. The successful nominee will be supportive of diversity and inclusivity.

Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in the Contribution of Neurocognitive Functioning to Brain Health – University of Ottawa

A major aspect of brain health relates to the negative functional, psychological, and social consequences of brain lesions and dysfunctions. Conversely, behavioural, cognitive, psychological and social interventions can improve outcomes following brain insults. Using a variety of strategies, including animal models, cellular and molecular biology, genomics, electrophysiology, behaviour and neuroimaging, this chair will examine the interactions among the biological bases of functional neural plasticity, cognitive functioning, and brain health. The development of innovative strategies and therapeutic tools is dependent on understanding of the physical and psychological manifestations of brain diseases.

Assigned to the School of Psychology in the Faculty of Social Sciences, the chair will strengthen efforts that have been made to make uOttawa an international leader in Brain Health and will also benefit from collaborations with colleagues in the Faculty of Medicine,  in the uOttawa Brain and Mind Research Institute, the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute, and the Institute on Mental Health Research at the Royal Mental Health Centre.

Tier 2 CRC Program Description: Tier 2 Chairs, tenable for five years and renewable once, are for exceptional emerging researchers, acknowledged by their peers as having the potential to lead in their field. For each Tier 2 Chair, the institution receives $100,000 annually for five years. New Tier 2 Chairs will also receive an annual research stipend of $20,000 during their first term.

Candidates should, at a minimum, be assistant or associate professors, or possess the necessary qualifications to be appointed to these levels. Nominating institutions may nominate a professor or a researcher who is more than 10 years from their highest degree at the time of nomination and has experienced legitimate career interruptions (see acceptable justifications). In such cases, institutions must submit to the Secretariat a formal justification (using the Tier 2 Justification Screening Form), explaining why the nominee is still considered to be an emerging scholar. The University recognizes the legitimate impact that leaves (e.g., parental leave, leave due to illness) can have on a candidate’s record of research achievement and that these leaves will be taken into careful consideration during the assessment process. New CRC nominees are also eligible for infrastructure support from the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) to help acquire state-of-the-art equipment essential to their work.

Rank and salary: Regular tenure-track academic appointment in the School of Psychology in the Faculty of Social Sciences. This position is governed by a collective agreement between the University of Ottawa and  the Association of Professors of the University of Ottawa.
