To:

The Honourable Jane Philpott,
Minister of Health
House of Commons Ottawa, Ontario
K1A 0A6

Dear Dr. Philpott,

On behalf of the membership of the Canadian Association for Neurosciences we would like to thank you for arranging a meeting between scientists and CIHR leaders to address our growing concerns regarding the quality of the peer review system. Your recognition of the importance of this issue, which affects the livelihood of research laboratories across the country, and your rapid intervention have led to important improvements that will positively impact all Canadian health researchers.

We are very pleased that face-to-face peer review will be reinstated for the next rounds of CIHR funding competition. This format, recognized as the international gold standard for peer review, provides the most effective review and feedback to the applicants. We thank you and your office for listening to scientists, for acting swiftly and hence for ensuring that the highest quality scientific projects are funded throughout the country from the budget of the CIHR.

In the near future, members of the Canadian Association for Neuroscience will provide feedback to the panel responsible for the review of federal support for fundamental science launched by The Honourable Kirsty Duncan and chaired by Dr. David Naylor. This review will play a key role in restoring Canada’s leading role in science and research excellence and in sustaining our place in the world. Canadian scientists are committed to making important and significant contributions to biomedical research for the benefit of all Canadians. With the help of your government we will ensure that these aspirations become a reality.

We look forward to growing the overall excellence of scientific research funding and welcome any opportunities to contribute in this process.

Sincerely,

The Members of the Executive Committee of the Canadian Association for Neuroscience:

Freda Miller, PhD
