Postdoctoral Fellow / Senior Data Scientist / Biostatistician – Memorial University of Newfoundland

Position Title: Postdoctoral Fellow / Senior Data Scientist / Biostatistician
Neuroimmunology & Multiple Sclerosis Research
Memorial University of Newfoundland – Faculty of Medicine

Location: St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada (remote or hybrid work arrangements may be considered)
Duration: 1 year (renewable, contingent on performance and funding)
Start Date: Spring-Summer 2026

The Translational Neuroimmunology Laboratory invites applications for a highly motivated to join a multidisciplinary research program led by Dr. Craig Moore (https://www.mun.ca/medicine/faculty-and-staff-resources/faculty-a-z/moore-craig-s.php). This position is supported through a major award from Branch Out Neurological Foundation to advance innovative research on exercise as a disease-modifying therapy in multiple sclerosis (MS). This role represents a unique opportunity to work with one of Canada’s most deeply phenotyped MS cohorts and biorepositories (HITMS), integrating longitudinal clinical, behavioural, fitness, and high-dimensional biomarker datasets to address fundamental questions in disease progression and therapeutic response.

The successful candidate will play a central role in an effort to:

  • Extract and analyze molecular biomarker data from >1000 longitudinal patient samples
  • Integrate biomarker profiles with clinical, cognitive, and fitness measures
  • Identify biological signatures associated with disease progression and response to exercise
  • Investigate why some individuals show improved trajectories in MS

This work is embedded within the Health Research Innovation Team in MS (HITMS), a decade-long longitudinal cohort with extensive biospecimens and deep phenotyping.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and implement advanced statistical and computational analyses of datasets
  • Integrate omics-scale biomarker data (e.g., cytokines, proteins, circulating factors) with longitudinal clinical outcomes
  • Develop and apply models for:
    • Longitudinal and repeated-measures data
    • Disease progression and subgroup stratification
    • Predictive modeling and biomarker discovery
  • Perform data harmonization across platforms (e.g., Luminex, Ella systems)
  • Contribute to study design, analysis plans, and interpretation of results
  • Collaborate closely with clinicians, neuroscientists, and trainees
  • Lead and contribute to high-impact publications and grant outputs
  • Support training of graduate and undergraduate trainees

Required Qualifications

  • PhD in Biostatistics, Bioinformatics, Data Science, Computational Biology, or a related field
  • Strong expertise in statistical and machine learning modeling of longitudinal data
  • Experience with high-dimensional biological or clinical datasets
  • Proficiency in R, Python, or similar analytical platforms
  • Demonstrated track record of peer-reviewed publications

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in neuroimmunology, MS, or chronic disease cohorts
  • Familiarity with biomarker platforms (e.g., multiplex assays, proteomics)
  • Experience working with large longitudinal cohort datasets
  • Strong collaborative and communication skills

Compensation

Salary will be commensurate with experience and aligned with funding guidelines (e.g., postdoctoral or senior research associate scales; approximately $70,000+ annually as per grant allocation).
