Content: | Synapses are highly specialized intercellular junctions that mediate the transmission of information between axons and target cells. A fundamental property of synapses is their ability to modify the efficacy of synaptic communication through various forms of synaptic plasticity. Recent developments in imaging techniques have revealed that synapses exhibit a high degree of morphological plasticity under basal conditions and also in response to neuronal activity that induces alterations in synaptic strength. Glutamate is the major excitatory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system and as such the glutamate receptors play a vital role in the mediation of excitatory transmission. Ionotropic glutamate receptors.α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionate-preferring glutamate receptors (AMPARs) and N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) are concentrated at postsynaptic sites in excitatory synapses. This presentation will centre on the role of AMPA and NMDA receptors on synapse maintenance, development and remodeling. |
