The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI) is an Affiliated Research Institute of the University of Ottawa and the research arm of The Ottawa Hospital. The OHRI has grown rapidly to become one of the largest and most important hospital-based research institutes in Canada. Students will be affiliated with University of Ottawa, Brain & Mind Institute. uOttawa’s Neuroscience community is fast expanding, highly dynamic and offers a rich array of collaborative opportunities.

Description of the Position:Our lab is interested in understanding the neuro-immune mechanisms that affect synaptic plasticity and susceptibility to stroke, type 2 diabetes and neurological disorders. The techniques used including transgenic mouse models, combination of biochemistry, Molecular and cell biology and fluorescence microscopy imaging techniques, together with mouse behavior studies.

Two immediate focuses are:

  1. Alzheimer’s disease.
  2. Autism

The laboratory is equipped with molecular and electrophysiology (patch-clamp) equipment and a cellular biology imaging system. The Institue is equipped with a two photon-uncaging and imaging system to facilitate the study of synaptic plasticity. The trainees will have the opportunity to learn and perform animal surgery and animal behavior studies, depending on the projects.
