Shrum Chair in Neurobiology at Simon Fraser University

The Gordon M. Shrum Chair in Science Fund was created in 1983; this endowed chair was established in the name of the founding chancellor of Simon Fraser University. The Faculty of Science seeks to fill the Shrum Chair for a 5-year term, with an ongoing, tenure-track appointment at the Associate Professor level.

We seek a candidate who engages in translational research relevant to diseases of the nervous system. Research areas include, but are not restricted to, determining fundamental principles of neuronal development and function in human health or dissecting the mechanisms of impaired neuronal development, nervous system dysfunction and neurodegeneration. The ideal candidate is an outstanding and innovative researcher who is internationally recognized with an interdisciplinary background in biomedical research.

The successful candidate will join a vibrant and growing community of neuroscientists across multiple departments that encompasses fundamental to translational research. The SFU neuroscience community has particular expertise in cellular neuroscience, neuroimaging, sensorimotor control, neuromechanics, neuroplasticity, and molecular neurobiology of development, ageing, and disease. We envisage that the candidate will bring innovative experimental approaches that complement and expand existing strengths. For information on neuroscience research at SFU see

The Chair will play a leadership role in bridging existing research strengths in molecular, cellular, and systems-level neuroscience at SFU. S/he will facilitate ties with researchers at SFU and associated institutions to initiate collaborative research projects and lead multi-investigator grants. The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to the teaching mission of their home department.

Applicants should submit a single PDF containing a cover letter; a CV including a list of publications; the names and email addresses of four referees; and a 2-3 page document summarizing their qualifications and a vision for a 5 year research program. This latter document should indicate how the research would capitalize on and improve existing research strengths at Simon Fraser University. Applications should be submitted by email to:
